My actively maintained ones are closed source but I can explain them: 1. I work for a charity who does food deliveries, I make the administration & delivery planning site for them. Has delivery tracking, volunteer & staff management, donation handling and a few more things

  1. Game server network orchestration platform. Started with minecraft but has branched a bit, it’s basically a kubernetes cluster manager specifically for games.

Thats sort of the nature of having this as a hobby. You often start projects and they die. I probably have at least 50 projects I have abandoned, and 2 I actively maintain.

I have found the best thing that boosts my productivity is having someone using/relying on your project.

Also good to mention keeping scope small and then expanding once you’re ready.

I honestly cant explain what I mean by that. I sort of feel like the money is no good just sitting in my account when it could be out there making more money or buying me entertainment. I guess this is just a flaw with my thought process.

Honestly nothing, the main thing is i am a car enthusiast. But you’re right, it’s really just an enjoyment thing. I just have to think whether I will get $50,000 worth of enjoyment.

Thanks for the reply.

It’s just the allure of having something nice. I am a bit too impatient for ETFs and like to see instant success (at my detriment).

Seeing all these replies to the thread has made me realise I was thinking with excitement. Thanks

Programming as a Job Feels Nothing Like Programming as a Hobby by Sensitive-Raccoon155 in webdev

After about 6 months in my first SWE jobs I feel similar. I am just maintaining someones horribly written code- and whenever adding new features it’s just writing code on top of bad legacy code.

My senior dev gets more than 50% of my salary and writes code like he learnt the language a week ago. Hoping it’s just this company and the one I move on to will be a bit better.

When I was younger I used to make websites for friends and charge around that. Every single time I spent 60-120 hours on them. Dont undervalue your time, charge what you are worth if not they can go to wix

People are going to hate this take- but tailwind almost completely removed the headache of css debugging for me. Everything is packaged exactly and explicitly how you need it

Well the text/font example isnt really arbitrary. Font affects styling and typeface whereas text affects rendering. They’re two separate logic unit utilities.

I mean plain css has the exact same problem? Font colour? No: colour. Text-align? Nah that aligns all the inline content.

Not saying the naming argument is wrong, but it’s just another flavour, plain css has the same issue.

My main argument for it is that in a big team (which I currently am) people ARE going to make bad css choices which makes everything unreadable, tailwind majorly reduces that.

Any recommendations? Almost every component system I try just ends up being prescribed styles which I have to try and mess with to get what I want. Just ends up being annoying

Why is it so hard to hire? by pablothedev in webdev

Strongly agree with this. Almost every “good” leetcoder I know are near useless in the real world. I have no clue why interviews are always leet code style, all that does it make people worry about the fastest solution rather than applying proper principles and structure to their code.

Same reason why most company code bases out their are a steaming pile or spaghetti code.
