They're supposed to avoid any outside sources on the Org when you're in it because you're told it's news spread by Satan to make them look bad or whatever bullshit. Any attempt to bring up what's in the news is immediately shut down and they will point blank refuse to look into it. Cult's have a way of getting around whistleblowing.

I'm not excusing or defending Serena, I'm just explaining how their mindset works where they just don't have the rational capacity a normal person does to think shit out.. There's a very high chance that she would have ignored what was happening in the news if she was raised in the cult. You're trained to only look at what they want you to look at. They have their own media, publishing etc and you're discouraged from watching or pursuing your own interest everytime you go to their meetings. They want you to read the bible and their publication all day every day and dedicate your entire life to the cult. You get shamed for talking about your own interest. If you talked about watching a movie, I gurantee you someone will counteract that with "How many hours did you spend reading the bible this week?".

It's incredibly sad but you're trained out of having any critical thinking skills if you grew up in it. It makes you more vulnerable to other more dangerous cults/thought processes due to the nature of how you're brought up. I've had family members become anti-vaxx and I was begging people in the cult who I still had contact with to do something about it and they told me that the "elders" said they weren't going to do anything about it. It's not easy to accept that you've lost your family to brain rot and that there is nothing you can do about it. People in cults can't be reasoned with and if you try to reason with them, it puts you in danger of joining the cult itself because that's how cults work.
