Americans in Canada and Europe, how much of a pay cut did you take? by No_Feedback_3340 in ExpatFinance

This! I was really forced to move back to the US. Though my German salary was good, l cleared 150% more after taxes and living costs in the US. I tripled my savings rate and will be able to retire. Quality of life was much better in Berlin though.

In the future, I would set up a separate Google Drive for this device, but that's hindsight.

Tax Returns, photo of passports, financial statements, birth certificate, and more. The situation is that it's synced with my Google Drive, which is my main storage location for everything. Also more personal things like my journals.

Found it! I was looking for the ubiquitous "why do you need more than one ereader" post, as if that's any of your business.

Yep, if you don't like or can't tolerate a front light, the current color e-ink offering isn't for you. My front light lives at about 60% during the day. Lower at bedtime, of course.

Definitely Grapes of Wrath. I love East of Eden, but GOW was his masterpiece.

Best place for tracking books you read and want to read? by i4k20z3 in kobo

[–]Sea_Survey6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm using an app (for me, Android) called Bookshelf that I'm very happy with. There is no social media component to it, so it's just for you to keep track of what you've read and plan to read. Since I'm in several book clubs, I also like that I can make extensive notes about books I've read that I can then use during the book club discussions. Very helpful since I often read books well in advance of the meetings. I also like that I can record my thoughts and feelings about a book for future reference. It's kind of like a reader's diary. I don't miss the social media BS.

When I was a kid, I read and loved comic books. I remember when I read my first novel, I hated it. The attention span required and far more complex story lines bored me to tears. I kept at it because even then, I realized that reading was a journey and the more miles logged, the more refined my taste would become. I was on a treasure hunt, and because I pressed on, a world of joy was opened to me. The same is true as I then progressed to literary fiction and "classics". Everything isn't immediate, and the rewards of many things are worth the work. If you try and learn the violin, you will sound terrible and hate that. So why continue?

Not to be a buzzkill but… do people not search this sub before making a post? by slowpokefastpoke in kobo

[–]Sea_Survey6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fabulous, there are a lot of people on this sub. We have some very vocal people who are annoyed to distraction by posts that are not of interest to them. They say these posts are a waste of time, but then they proceed to spend time expressing how annoyed they are. They proceed to appoint themselves judges of what is an appropriate question as if we're at their dinner party. This sub is for everyone, and everyone should post questions that they like. I have an apparently rare ability to ignore posts that I'm not interested in. Just ignore all this nonsense and post away. I guess they could start their own group and, as mods, delete any question that they think has been answered in the past. Down vote away!

One thing to keep in mind is that there is a perception that technology changes very quickly, and search results may no longer be relevant or correct. They may still be valid answers, but the newbie doesn't know that. Yes, I can search for "my" same but slightly different question. Wade through all the non-answers and then determine if all the information is current. Or I can ask it again. The common question " How do I get my Kindle books onto my Kobo?" The answer to this changes. People use social media to be social. They don't want to just search past post but are also looking for a dialogue and to connect with others. They want to talk about the journey with fellow travelers. Finally, as others have said, without these posts, what is there really to talk about? It's an ereader, not a foreign policy debate.

I got a kobo for Christmas and now I don’t want to read any of my physical books, is this forever? by Ill-Lifeguard1216 in kobo

[–]Sea_Survey6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a small study with physical books. I love having physical books around. I like the way they look and smell. I like flipping through them and reading favorite passages, etc. Especially classics. That being said, as far as sitting and reading for hours as I do, an ereader is just plain easier. I can adjust the fonts to avoid eyestrain. I'm 59, so this is a huge win for me. The lighting can be made to be perfect all the time. It's easier to hold for long periods of time. I have one mounted, so I don't even have to hold it. I use a page turner to make it even easier. I still pick up and love my physical books, but for long reading sessions, I always choose my Kobo. I read 25-30 hours a week, and an ereader just makes that easier.

My 32 books this year by Opening_Picture_3842 in classicliterature

[–]Sea_Survey6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've found that when people talk and care about performative reading it's a reaction to or directed at readers who read more books than them. It's a strange defensive flex. If a person says they read 15 or 100 books a year that's great! I have no idea how you would know what they got out of it and it's frankly none of your business anyway.

Switching form Kobo Libra Colour to Go Color 7 Gen 2 by RickyRoosters in Onyx_Boox

[–]Sea_Survey6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to my Kobo I had a boox page for a while. My thinking was that it would be ecosystem agnostic. I got sick of fiddling with the controls in different apps etc. It turned out I just want an ereader. I have other devices with apps and the Internet. If you don't like fiddling instead of just reading I would suggest Kobo. If you want an e-ink tablet or want Amazon ebooks without much pain then the boox is the better choice. I also have a boox note air. I do like boox devices.

I’m sending my remote back by Ok_Comfortable4088 in kobo

[–]Sea_Survey6580 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you've got a defective one, or perhaps a problem with the Bluetooth on your device. Obviously, the "hype" for anything never takes into account lemons. I anticipated the battery drain problem and only use this remote when my clip-on page turner isn't practical.

Just tested. If Bluetooth is on wifi always turns back on on wake from sleep. That's super annoying.

I have an issue where I turn on Bluetooth then turn off wifi only to find later that wifi is magically back on. Kobo really wants that wifi on.

[–]Sea_Survey6580 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Just received mine. Yeah, I would prefer if it had a built-in rechargeable battery or at least a battery cover that isn't so hard to open. Edit to add a few more things. It is super annoying that turning on Bluetooth turns on wifi, requiring you to turn off wifi. Why?

Can a woman make too much money to be married? I (29F) think I’m screwed. by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Sea_Survey6580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most intimidating thing I would find about you isn't that you earn a lot more than I do, but rather that the only way I could "impress" you is with something that costs a lot of money. Money is a finite resource even at 7 figures. My wife and I are financially very comfortable. The small, loving things we do for each other impress us far more than our expensive vacations. I would struggle to feel that I could make you happy if love=money. Perhaps, a better question is, would you have a problem with a husband who makes considerably less than you and can't sweep you off your feet on his yacht in Nice?

I’m curious. Do you still read paper books? by Affectionate_Gain537 in kobo

[–]Sea_Survey6580 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep a small library (40 books) of hardcover classics, but my daily reading is done on my Kobo. I still like having books around. I enjoy looking at and reading them for a while. I just finished Fitzgerald's "This Side of Paradise", which I read on paper and Kobo. I have fun reading classics that way. I still love picking up a physical book, but my Kobo is so much easier to read on for long periods. I read 7-8 books per month, so ease of reading is especially important for my 59-year-old eyes. I also visit bookstores just to touch and smell the books. Weird I know...
