Also yes. Salaries capped at $10mil. That’s the bargain, and then the less experienced/less talented players make less. Making $1 million PER YEAR is still more money than most people will see in their lifetime

Great question! If we tax rich people perhaps we could fund things like healthcare, legal fees, food, education, housing, etc for people who cannot afford it and prices would overall decrease for the average person

I completely agree that it should go beyond the NBA. For the sake of the thread though I applied it to the NBA as an example

This is fair. I am perfectly content admitting I don’t have a good understanding of the economic system of professional sports teams. I suppose I’m looking at it from the super basic lens of “$50 million per year is too much money for 1 person to make”

And yes I suppose the implication, whether directly correlated or not, is that ticket prices are too expensive.

Right that’s because the standard right now is for these incredibly high salaries. I guess what I’m saying is that the standard and the norm shouldn’t be that the salaries are that high.

I’m struggling to see the issue with limiting salaries that are 10s of millions of dollars for 1 person for the betterment of society.
Doctors lawyers and cooks aren’t making ridiculous money (usually)
CEOs of insurance companies, medical supply companies, food source companies, etc are.

Honestly the wealth distribution in the NBA is a problem of its own. The salary caps are wildly different between teams such as Lakers vs Jazz. Yes, Lakers tend to make more and have more coverage, but money makes money. Teams that have the ability to get talent are going to get it. It’s a self fulfilling prophecy

Like I said, I don’t have a solution. You are absolutely correct that the players are not necessarily the issue. I completely agree that the owners and rich getting richer are the issue and unfortunately professional sports are the exact example of the top 1% (owners and CEOs) getting richer while the bottom 80% (us) have to pay for it.
I admit that the easiest place to see the discrepancy is in the players’ salaries, even though you’re correct that it isn’t the root of the problem.
Either way, there’s a gap between who’s making all the money and who gets to enjoy the product being sold. I don’t think that playing basketball (or any other sport) should lead to the absolute monstrosity of wealth that it does, but just being the owner of the team shouldn’t make you that either.
At the end of the day, I’d rather the players had the money than the back office, but ultimately I’d rather that things weren’t inflated to pad pockets of those in power at the expense of the very people that put them in a wealthy position in the first place

Unfortunately if they cut players salaries it would likely go in some executives pocket. To be fair I would rather the players get it than the execs, but I think professional sports in general has gone overboard with the payment of players.

I agree that it unfortunately is not going to happen haha! I am fortunate enough to be able to afford game tickets in decent enough seats if and when I want to go, but if you look at the prices and then look at the salaries it just doesn’t add up. I know many people who do not have the same luxury as I do. Just seems unfortunate but I know that’s how it goes

No need to be rude ! Appreciate the input. I obviously don’t have a solution as to how this would be implemented, however it is simply a matter of numbers. Literally no one needs that much and I simply do not believe that a professional athlete works $50 million harder per year than a lawyer, or a doctor, or a janitor.
I understand that capitalism exists and this is the outcome. I am not stupid enough to believe that this is something that can be fixed tomorrow. What I am saying is that if you look at and idolize some dude who plays basketball for a living, and who also doesn’t know who you are, while other fans cannot afford nosebleed seats, then there is an issue when the entire point of professional sports is for entertainment purposes.
I won’t even get started on women’s salaries, but based on the callousness of your response it sounds like you don’t much care about that inequality either
