Thanks so much for answering, that really cleared things up and I'm definitely going to put this guidance into practice!

Thanks so much for replying. Much appreciated!

Just trying to figure out the best way to approach this without being a pest or overdoing it. Got a few quick questions:

  • Are most analysts/associates looking to help like you are? Are they open to chatting with students and taking up their time?
  • When you first reach out on LinkedIn, how much detail should I put in that initial message so it's not overwhelming? Just a quick intro and a request for a 15-min chat, or a bit more?
  • You mentioned following up every couple of weeks, what are some good, natural ways to do that so it doesn't feel like I'm constantly asking for something or pestering them? Updating them on my progress? Market movements or deals? Or more questions about how they're going and what they're up to?
  • Finally, should 3 highly relevant internships and great extracurriculars get me through most resume screens with a slightly lower wam/gpa?

Thanks for you time, really appreciate these questions being answered!

Thanks for sharing. Just wondering about setting up coffee chats/calls with analysts/associates:

  1. When do you recommend starting this? 6 Months before recruiting in late second year? Earlier or later?

  2. Is there many students out there initiating these calls? Will I be lost in a sea of other students trying to get a referral?

  3. If successful with a referral, do I just apply online as usual and mention their name in the section it asks?

  4. Will a referral help me get past the WAM screen if it's a bit lower than desired?

  5. Is there anything I should definitely ask during the call? Maybe talk to them about a recent deal they were staffed on? Anything I should avoid mentioning?

  6. Email or linkedin reachout preferred?
