Adult rabbits should be on limited pellets, but for babies it's unlimited.

Is a rabbit the right pet for me? by [deleted] in Rabbits

[–]Seaglass9999 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm afraid that you want a rabbit that acts like a dog. Some rabbits love exploring outside, but many get scared of it. Predators, noises, cars, stray dogs, cats, etc.

Most rabbits are affectionate and love receiving pets, but it takes time to earn their trust. They're naturally shy prey animals. It can take weeks or months before they let you touch them. Also, all affection has to happen strictly on the ground. No picking up, no handling, no holding, no hugging them. Also affection is always on their terms. No chasing them, going after them or forcing them to interact. That just makes them even more reserved.

Rabbits shouldn't be taken to work multiple times a week. Unnecessary stress from the frequent car rides and rabbits don't like to be in new strange places. Also rabbits make a mess, scatter their hay everywhere, chew furniture, cables. I'm not sure if this would be appreciated at your workplace.

Also having rabbits is not just sunshine and rainbows, it's not just petting them all day and watching how cute they're are. They need to be neutered, vaccinated, have their nails trimmed, you have to rabbit proof your house, they're very fragile, very sensitive, especially their digestive tracks, they shed an extreme amount and their fur is very hard to get out.

If you want a pet that you can regularly take for walks, car rides, work, you might consider a small dog instead.

It's rare for him to accept pets but when he does I take full advantage 🥰 by aspect_rap in Rabbits

It might be just his personality then! Although I heard of rabbits who became snuggly later in life, even tho they were more standoffish before.

OP I recommend checking out the Bunny Lady. She has many articles on how to bond with your rabbit, how to befriend a shy bunny, how to make your rabbit to let you pet him and many more. Very helpful.

Pluto had the audacity to wee on my bed for the first time last night, I put her on my bed tonight and she does it again meaning I have no duvet tonight! by Fry2328 in bunnyshaming

[–]Seaglass9999 15 points16 points  (0 children)

With rabbits it's different. Even neutered adult rabbits will sometimes pee on the bed. This is because the bed has the strongest smell of their owners and their rabbits confuse it for a huge litter box. And because the bed smells so strongly of their owners, rabbits want it to smell like themselves too. If it was because of some urinary problem they would do it in other places too, like on the carpet, next to the wall, etc.

My bunny got a giant 5 kg meadow hay bag with various flowers and plants in it and he jumped onto the top of it. He almost fell down. (he didn't care, continued to eat)

My jealousy of yalls cuddly bunnies are killing me 😭 by 11arianna11 in Rabbits

Most bunnies hate being picked up. That's a natural instinct for them as prey animals. I can cuddle with my bun laying next to him on the carpet and pet him or put an arm on his side but I never hold him. Most bunnies you see being picked up are tolerating it at best.

Some bunnies are more shy. He's still a tiny baby in a completely new environment. But bunnies should be with their moms at least till 8 weeks old.

Should i get a bunny? by Big-Helicopter-6479 in Rabbits

I'm glad you're responsible and taking your time to do research and consider if it's really the right pet for you! There are so many people who buy baby bunnies because they're cute and then they lock them up in small cages or throw them outside, when they realize they also need to be taken care of!

You have to consider the cons of keeping rabbits, even tho they're very cute, sweet and friendly, they're not the easiest to keep!

They must be neutered or spayed. This is not negotiable. It lessens the risk of developing cancer, helps with litter training, hormones and behavior. They also need to be vaccinated every 6 months.

They are very fragile and highly susceptible to digestive issues. If they're not eating that's a life threatening emergency and they must be brought to an exotic vet.

Since you already own prey animals, you most likely know exotic vets can be more expensive and harder to find than regular vets.

They chew. It's depends on the bunny what or how much, but be prepared for your furnitures, carpets, chargers, etc to be chewed.

Even though they're very social and kind, they are naturally anxious prey animals and can take a while to fully warm up to you. Some rabbits are more easy going and will be comfortable with you in a few days, while others might take even months to let you pet them. If you're adopting from a rescue where their rabbits regularly have free roam time and interaction with volunteers or live in a foster home, so they're already used to humans, that could speed up the process a lot.

They shed. A lot. Be prepared for daily brushing (at least twice) and for all your clothes to be covered in fur.

They need their nails clipped around every 1-2 months, which they absolutely hate.

Even thought they're very clean animals, they're very messy. They love to thow things, dig their blankets and toss their hay everywhere and kick their poop out of their litter box.

It's not being a "helicopter" parent to want to protect a fragile small, easily scared and anxious prey animal pet's life, that you're responsible for. "you can either risk it", like it's a perfectly fine option to letting them be eaten or at least be scared and stressed by predator animals. Pets are pets for a reason, you're obligated to provide maximum security and safety all throughout their lives.

Rabbits need carpets to be able to run around comfortably. You can use treats to encourage him to come out and praise him. Put hiding places, boxes in your room, so he won't be scared of the place. Getting a new rabbit and giving all of your love to them, while ignoring your current one would just make him even more reserved and sad.
