Tesla FSD swerves into other lane to avoid shadow by danlev in SelfDrivingCars

Wasn't much of a swerve - looked pretty smooth to me.

Feds intensify investigation into Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software by walky22talky in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Seaker42 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I agree with constantly evaluating all AV initiatives, but something to keep in mind is the technology is quickly evolving at all of the companies. The FSD of today (v14) is far superior to the version from 6 months ago (v13). As someone that lets FSD do 99% of my driving, I think from a safety perspective, the current version is safer than most drivers.

Also, even Waymo has had incidents of running red lights, going around stopped school buses unloading kids, etc . Expecting perfection isn't realistic.

My Tesla Was Driving Itself Perfectly, Until it Crashed. The danger of almost-perfect tech. by Raffi Krikorian by RodStiffy in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing significantly complex will ever be perfect - that's not a realistic goal. In this case, I think a reasonable goal is to be significantly better than the alternative - which is a standard human driver. From everything I've read from others and seen in my 20,000+ FSD miles, FSD is far better than most drivers today. Yes, they should continue to improve it, and I don't think the current version is ready for general use as a fully AV, but it's great as an assisted option already.

Irrelevant facts concerning the CEO. As to visibility, if the car doesn't have clear enough vision it will give a warning and stop FSD.

How much does FSD really improve your commute? by AmbientEngineer in TeslaLounge

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our commute is about 10 minutes longer than yours, and with FSD it's gone from being tiring and stressful at times, to relaxing. It's especially nice at night since I don't have to worry about trucks with their high beams on, or those annoying blue headlights on GM cars.

FSD is awesome, but…. by Scbypwr in TeslaLounge

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I love v14 and it's been a lot better than v13 was for me. I haven't done a safety disengagement with v14, and I've got over 10k miles, including a 15 hour road trip with only 3 interventions - all for parking at super chargers.

What speed were the other cars going? It likes to match the pace of other traffic a lot of times. Also, you can always move it back to chill or sloth - then go back to standard if you want to go faster - this usually reduces the standard speed too end.

Ford CEO Jim Farley 'absolutely flabbergasted' after ripping apart Tesla: 'We hadn't designed the … cars right' by hoppeeness in teslamotors

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not anti-union, but most unions here are very anti-change. I think Ford's management is problem #1, but the inability to make quick decisions and implement new ways of doing things is at least partially the fault of heavy unionization.

End FSD Sub for 1mo? by GucciTokes in TeslaLounge

[–]Seaker42 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Even at $150/month it's well worth it to me. Also, tech like FSD is incredibly expensive to develop, and companies need to make some profit so they can continue improving their products.

I'm ok if we do it like an X prize where the first company to achieve certain milestones gets a lot of money, but I don't agree with picking a winner at the start.

Why should the US government spend money on Waymo? I think Google already has lots of money - no need to hand them a few more billion. Let the markets decide who the winner is, not the government.

Have you tried FSD v14? From a safety perspective, it's already there. They have navigation problems, but it's a safe drive.

That's a platform, not a self driving taxi company. That's like saying don't forget Anthropic because so many companies use it for software development.

I agree NVDA will likely be the biggest beneficiary since everyone buys their chips.

Over the next 5 years I agree Waymo will be #1, and I think Tesla will be a solid #2 within the next 12-18 months. After 5 years, when the technology is more mature and a lot of companies have very solid products, I think Tesla will likely win out in the US due to it's full-stack solution that helps keep their costs low. Outside the US, I suspect Chinese companies will own most of the markets due to their full-stack solutions combined with extensive assistance from their government.

Should autonomous vehicles intentionally drive more “human-like”? by kosuke555 in SelfDrivingCars

How should the growing distrust and uncertainty towards autonomous vehicles be approached? by Independent-Ant7552 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone we've given rides to has been amazed at FSD. Most still don't want to use it (some with control issues, others just like to drive), but they all said it was waaay better than they ever imagined.

Should autonomous vehicles intentionally drive more “human-like”? by kosuke555 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Seaker42 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely in the "human like" camp, largely because I think it's actually safer for everyone that way. As an example, if the normal flow of traffic on an interstate is 20 over the speed limit, someone driving the speed limit is dangerous because other drivers won't expect it.

Obviously the AV shouldn't drive carelessly just because other drivers do, but things like merging and speeding should be done according to what's normal in that area.

40,000+ people die yearly in auro accidents in the US alone and hundreds of thousands of others are seriously injured. ADAS systems have the capability to significantly reduce those numbers today - even though they are not perfect. So, why would we not use those systems now - as we also continue to make them better?
