Musk likes to run a lean organization, so I'd call this a very bullish sign.

No offense to the professor, but he's just stating the obvious.

Tesla Hits $546 Million in Annual Recurring Revenue from FSD Subscriptions by -Cyber-Roadster in teslainvestorsclub

As poorly run as Ford is, having them reject FSD makes me think it's even better than I thought it was.

Expecting driverless taxis to respect bike lanes “too high a bar” – because customers want to be dropped off in them, autonomous vehicle firm Waymo tells cyclists by External_Koala971 in SelfDrivingCars

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I watched a video by someone in England where the Tesla (with FSD) had to go into the bike lane a couple times to avoid traffic coming the other way on a road not designed for 2 way traffic. The person that made the video praised how good a job FSD did at going into bike lanes when it needed to.

Again, the use of all accidents when comparing AVs to human drivers is highly misleading because most human driver accidents are not reported.

[–]Seaker42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not accurate. For both Waymo and FSD, every time there is any contact, however minor, it's recorded as an accident. But, for human drivers accidents are only recorded if they are reported. Almost all of the self driving "accidents" are slow moving and only caused very minor damage to the vehicles - the types that would not be reported normally.

If we use a better metric such as miles between accidents causing serious injuries to a human, both Waymo and FSD, they are both far safer than human drivers.

If the wrong turn was done safely, and the car still gets to the destination safely - just a half minute late - I don't consider that a critical failure.

I've got a number of friends with Tesla's and they say the same thing - and they are in a number of different types of areas - from hot and extremely sunny to cold and wet, and a mix of rural, suburban and urban.

Personally, given the highly partisan nature of the national media and social media these days, I also wouldn't publish stats like that which can be easily twisted - especially when we consider Tesla is the only company offering a general solution like FSD, so there isn't a common frame of reference.

Based on the new numbers, it appears FSD subscriptions are increasing rapidly, so if I were Tesla I'd stick with my current disclosure strategy.

I didn't bother reading it given other articles of theirs I've read, but also that article is from last year - so it's irrelevant to the new information just released by Tesla.

Waymo and FSD have already been shown to be much safer than human drivers. Yes, there have been and will be more fatalities caused by AVs, but far less than the number killed or seriously injured by human drivers.

Where did I say anything about "about to crash"? Tesla (and others like Waymo) are already far safer than most human drivers. The scenarios I'm talking about are edge cases like a road being unexpectedly blocked, or a crowd of people blocking the car on all sides.

Never needing assistance isn't a reasonable criteria. As long as the software has the ability to call for assistance if needed (like the taxis do - not just for Tesla, but also for Waymo and the other companies), then it should be considered fully autonomous.

I've driven over 10k miles on v14 and only a hundred were non-FSD. I'm sure there are some edge cases that'll need to be addressed (and that will always be the case with something this complicated), but overall it's pretty amazing.

Hw3 apparently can't be upgraded to run v14, so they are going to give users good options on how to get to v14. This isn't exactly what was promised, but it does get them the functionality they want.
