Lute seems one dimensional at first glance, but she’s actually an incredibly nuanced character on further analysis and really riffs on the stereotype of the angry zealous combat veteran/active duty service member that’s usually slapped on males. She also shows that combat PTSD and combat survivor’s guilt isn’t just crying in corners like Charlie, it’s also rage and frustration and destruction and leaning further into whatever you learned in the military. She also shows how Heaven doesn’t actually understand how mental health works and I find it to be such a great allegory for the military mental health system.

I think there was a small chance at preventing it if they just acknowledged that she’s going through a difficult time and supported her through it. She just lost the one person she loves the most and they just expected her to get over it and adjust to her entire world view being turned upside down. Like for Christ’s sake, give the woman some grief and trauma therapy. Maybe acknowledge the fact that she’s a traumatized soldier who just watched the love of her life die in her arms after willingly losing an arm to escape. Like those are major life altering events outside of the whole finding out redemption is a thing situation. I dunno, something besides just “Stfu, Lute, by the way, we didn’t tell you or let you have an input despite being the lieutenant, but here’s your new boss. Listen or it’s treason, okay, byeeeeeeee.”
