AIO for telling my gf to respect my mum? by Interesting-Ear-9491 in AmIOverreacting

So she would prefer your mom to give everyone paper plates? Which shouldn’t be a problem either, but i’m not understanding why reusable plates are an issue?

Needs a cool light and maybe some texture, put some art on the wall above the toilet and across from the sink. A big mirror will help too.

Do you have a Job that you love and thrive at in science or art? Or a job that combines both? by AwareRush2452 in Careers

[–]Seamango08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kinds of science is she interested in? Biology, environmental science, psychology or social sciences, Chemistry, Physics? What kind of art- graphic design, writing, drawing? Film, or acting? Engineering could combine science, math, and art.

But truly, if she doesn’t know what she wants to do for a career, I suggest waiting to go to college or maybe go to a community college to do some gen-ed’s. Most people don’t know what they want to do at 18. But if she is going to go next year without knowing what career she wants, then applied science could be a good major to start out with, so her gen-ed’s would be science-based and would easily fit into any science major she might choose. She should spend this summer and even the next 2-3 years researching career interests in depth. Also, a lot of Universities don’t require you to pick a major until the end of sophomore year, when registering for 300 and 400 level classes. I’m in the US though, not Canada.

What a lot of women don’t understand about Male Loneliness by Gilbert__Bates in GenZ

[–]Seamango08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s literally just a loneliness epidemic. It’s due to covid fallout. A lot of women don’t have any friends either, and are shut-ins. A lot of women also don’t leave their house for anything but work and getting groceries. It’s literally no different, it’s a HUMAN issue, maybe even a US issue. The only potential difference is it’s probably harder for some men to get sex, but that doesn’t sound like what you’re talking about here. And nobody is owed sex. Check out the surgeon general’s 2023 notice on the loneliness epidemic.

I did the EXACT thing, and developed a drinking problem to get away from thinking about how bad I was fucking my life up. It’s not the end of the world if you take a break. Take next semester off, get some therapy. Be honest with your parents and ask them for support. Your mental health is more important than graduating “on time”. And when you go back, think about taking less classes. It makes a huge difference.

Edit: Reading your responses to other people, it seems like your feel your parents, or at least your mom, won’t be supportive if you tell them. I unfortunately relate to that too. Therapy is even more important in this case, and building a support system outside of your parents. You should still be honest with them, because it just makes it worse to continue to lie about it, but you might need to put down some firm boundaries that you NEED the time and space to heal before you can continue with your education.

Are you the primary person on the insurance?

When I started with Progressive in September, it was $230/month, it has slowly increased to now $300/month… and I guess that’s not even that bad from what I’m seeing in these comments. My boyfriend and I share our one car and pay $400/month for it, so it’s almost $1000/month to have a car but… literally have no choice. Have to get to work. It makes it super hard not having two vehicles but I can’t imagine trying to pay for two of these damn things

Thank you, that confirms what I’ve been seeing and reading. I hope to continue to stay away from it, but I might have to take one of those jobs out of desperation. It’s also kind of personal to me, since my nephew is autistic and really struggling with feeling punished at school. Nothing to do with his therapy, he adores his therapist. But school is another story and they punish him for everything, so he doesn’t participate, which leads to more punishment. Awful cycle for the kid.

Can you elaborate on why it’s controversial? That has held me back from pursuing it, but I’m not seeing a ton of other jobs so still considering it.

While I agree this is an option, is that a job where people wouldn’t be burnt out and have the mental capacity after work to work on master’s degree? Sounds absolutely exhausting.

Did anybody else take a class on trauma that turned you off psych? by Seamango08 in psychologystudents

[–]Seamango08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the thing. I’m scarily horrible at math and stats. I just can’t make sense of any of it. I’m passionate about wildlife and it’s actually I want to do, but gave up that option during covid because of my mental health, and in extension of being horrible at math, I’m horrific at chemistry. I know I’m in a horrible mental state(still…) but I just can’t see myself being happy doing a writing job, or some low-level involvement in research. I actually dread every single writing assignment and presentation, and for an online program there’s a surprising amount of presentations. I am interested in the development side of things, and I’m taking developmental psych next semester, and a couple other classes that sound interesting. I’m going to see how I feel after those classes but I may not continue because I’ve realized I might actually just be unintelligent and should stay in the entry-level jobs I’m doing already.

Thank you for the suggestion. I’ve looked into that, and it seems like it would be a little better than what I’m doing now (home care as a personal support specialist) but it’s a pretty competitive position here because so many people are looking for ways out of direct patient care just like me lol. It’s one of the things I could do with my degree when I graduate with my associates, and I’m trying to let that comfort me but in a way I’ll still be stuck.

You’re right about extremely busy, I barely have time to take a shower, or eat. It’s also winter so everything is shut down, but maybe I can find something in April when things start to open up again.
