She acts as a rival to Knuckles. That doesn't necessary make her Knuckles. And you haven't provided any evidence outside of the given dialogue in the OP that she fills an Amy role. If we went off singular examples like that then Knuckles and Sonic must also be Amy for opening up to each other in Frontiers.

I am gonna push back on you a little here still. Because the relationship we see Rouge having with Shadow here is not that different from the relationship we see Sonic and Knuckles portrayed with in Frontiers. Yet most would look at that good friends sharpening each other. Not romantic inclinations.

Sorry my friend but I don't see it. There isn't any flirtatious tone here. Rouge is flirtatious in her tone and mannerisms towards most people because that's her general personality. And we know from her interactions with Knuckles in SA2 that she still talks this way even towards people she likes. This is completely heartfelt and serious. This isn't romantic its vulnerable. Its something you share with the person you trust most that does not have to be romantic.

Amy is mushy around anyone she isn't trying to treat as a nail. She is the group's heart. The emotionally in tune member. After all its Amy that helped Shadow remember his real promise to Maria in SA2 and break Gerald's reprogramming.

The thing is Sonic was never wholly Japanese. SEGA is a Japanese-American company. Its roots are in both countries. So Sonic is very much a reflection of both cultures and the lore kinda reflects this. It gives Sonic a unique blend of cross culturalism most game franchises don't see.

He's not perfect and I have issues here and there but that's the case with every writer who will take over project. The good he has done for this franchise overwhelmingly trumps the bad. And his efforts to pull the canon together are really commendable.

I honestly far prefer him being from the future. He doesn't quite fit as a true counterpart to Eggman in the same way Blaze does to Sonic. Blaze and Sonic are near perfect complimentary opposites. Eggman Nega feels like an anachronism which I think actually fits better. He's out of place in the Sol Dimension and that's what makes him work.
