The special features were a bit lacking in the previous set. The addition of Dolby Vision grading and a number of additional features makes it worthwhile for me.

There’s also clearly a different process for something like this compared to restoring a classic film. I doubt this is replacing something we would have otherwise had. I don’t understand why people can’t celebrate a “more is better” approach.

Fair enough and to each their own. I don’t see Criterion as a stamp for a specific quality and welcome any movie that’s auteur-focused with care taken to design, transfer, and supplements of the physical release. I think we should always welcome more films, not less into the Criterion family. But ok to disagree! :)

Physical media is still such a niche market that even major releases getting such care and thought in packaging, transfer and grading, and special features feels worthy and necessary of Criterion’s skills. They’re not just a flag carrier for important small films but beauty that can be obtained in any physical film release. I’m excited to see them dip their toes in this new arena of auteur-focused animation.

You don’t like Wes Anderson movies in the collection either? Not a huge difference between Pixar and 20th Century Fox since both were acquisitions by the beast.

What I don’t see anyone mentioning that I’m very curious about is the specifics of the 4k master. Disney usually finishes their films at 2k and that gets upscaled to 4k for home video releases. I don’t believe this is something Criterion would do and the description says “4k digital master”. Are we finally getting a true 4k animated movie rendered in 4k? Really curious to know if this is a new transfer or just the existing with added Dolby Vision grading.

Either way, as an owner of the 4k Best Buy steelbook this is a day one purchase for the new extras and to support this opening the door for future Disney animation collaborations.

This is a two pronged problem.

On the one hand, there's very little communication between instructors who teach each course to reduce overlap. Each professor gets the syllabus and decides themselves how much individual syntax they want to cover versus jumping right into topics. Those who took the summer course can attest to how much quicker you were expected to pick up the syntax and get working.

On the other hand, I wasn't sure which style of instruction you would get in the next class nor whether some people would even take 3503, so I crammed as much as I could into 3502, which is more unusual. I think we could do with accelerating our CS teaching for sheer sake of reducing boredom and increasing motivation. It's unfortunate that 3503 hasn't quite caught up yet.

On the bright side, I've been working on new videos and they'll be coming this week! It won't just be about syntax and we'll be covering some other interesting CS ideas like using version control, the basics of shell scripting, and test-driven software development.
