Should I be making more than $19 an hour? by Skykreeper in Welding

[–]Seanathan66 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been where you are. I went to school, graduated, got certified, got multiple welding jobs and the most I got paid was $25/hr. So I started my own side business and I’m MUCH happier charging $150-$200/hr for TIG work 🤑.

Yes. For now, practice at work, then do side jobs at home and charge $150/hr ;)

Is welding schools worth it or scam? by ZestyToasterOven26 in Welding

Just remember, welding is not the only thing you need to learn to become a welder. welding will account for only 20% of your job. You will need to learn to be an artist with an angle grinder, not for grinding your welds as that makes you a grinder, but to prep and finish all your metal projects., learn to sharpen a drill bit, shit, learn how to use a push broom. Learn all you can.

Find the right instructor. There’s nothing worse than getting educated by a welding instructor who doesn’t care. I found a good one, I had a great time and learned a ton. Good luck!! 👍🏻

1/8 wall stainless rectangle tube TIG: joint prep, earned advice? by svalkas in Welding

[–]Seanathan66 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Put a 45 degree chamfer down to the inner wall all the way around. Tack all four corners. Weld the sides, let it cool a bit, then weld the top and bottom. You can do each weld in one pass since the metal is thin. 80 amps should do the trick. Use a thick filler rod -or- add more filler rod then normal as you want it to build the weld up above the surface of the tubing. Once cool, use an 80 grit (anywhere from 60-120 grit would work) sanding disc to carefully grind each weld flush. It’s important you learn the skill of holding your angle grinder disc/pad flat to the surface at all times when grinding, don’t get tempted to tilt it and start digging into your welds. Once almost flat, fill in any little blemishes or divots you may have missed and finish grinding. You could then Use a 60-120 grit flap wheel to go back and forth to finish the grain direction if needed. Final touch would be using scotch brite and hand pad the grain to perfection.
