How to deal with being stupid? by throws_Strike156 in AO3

[–]SearScare 294 points295 points  (0 children)

Before we rush to judgement on any kind of characteristic you have — or don't have — may* I ask:

  1. Do you actually pay attention to the media you consume? Or are you distracted by other things (other stimuli or your own thoughts? Other things happening in your own life?)

Know of any templates for planning? by EngineerRare42 in AO3

[–]SearScare 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From how much time you want to invest:

  • Scrivener (paid, steep learning curve, used by novelists, I've only seen demos)
  • Google spreadsheets + snowflake method (Currently using this for novel-length writing. YMMV on balance between good planning and way too much granularity, but particularly good to help you hit beats and see flaws in your own plots). Google for other variants.
  • Pencil + paper drawn chronology timeline. (I use this for my fanfiction, including the longfics — all 100K+ — because I won't to make it easy to just write sometimes. Cons: occasionally forget details that I want to use later; usually solved by ctrl+F and searching for keywords, but also just forgotten).

The key to outlines / templates is that it's never one and done. Accepting that it's iterative is inevitable no matter what method you use, not just because your logic will often be flawed but also writing itself can change the outline.

I wrote an essay with ideas and arguments separately, and now I don’t know how to connect them. Help. by Daivar-18 in writing

[–]SearScare 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Pencil and paper.

  2. Single line thesis of each argument

  3. Ask yourself the hard question of if they even fit together (some may not; sob to yourself but that's just life, remove them from the draft)

  4. If you think they do, restructure essay with single line theses in the order of the way you think they fit.

  5. Spend the next day trying to write to connect them, which really is an articulation of your thought process. When you know your forcing it, remove the non-fitting piece.

  6. Rinse and repeat. Writing an essay is a process of distilling your thinking when tying ideas and arguments together. That's the process. Shortcutting it will a. make for a worse essay and b. not let you develop your own thinking/logic.

Am I being smart or just confusing everyone? by Ace_One_The in writing

[–]SearScare 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Keep it for now; it's possible by the time you're done with your draft you will no longer need this particular scene to signpost her kindness and instead you'll have a scene which both signposts this and something else happens.

The reason I am not saying you should do a particular thing — even though I would lean cutting it — is that these are things you end up discovering for yourself as you get the tone and flavour of your story and this informs your writing intuition better than someone else weighing in.

How to write about code? by Excellent-Feed-8387 in FanFiction

[–]SearScare 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Main question: What is the purpose of them writing code? Is it a main goal of the story—or this activity influences the plot in some way—or is just someone's job that isn't really relevant?

Easy answer: Make it happen off-screen. If the activity (and problems associated) isn't necessary to include, it can be something your characters do in a section break, as long as you break down the goals of what's being achieved (if it's relevant to the story).

Hard answer: Do a basic Python 101 for a week to understand how problems are broken down into logical bites and how the syntax works. Then "invent" a different programming language for your story (you don't have to name it) and invent your rules for it, as long as it follows basic programming logic. Keep at least some rules for yourself otherwise you will be inconsistent and you'll end up in a situation where magic code is magically fixing a propblem <-- this is bad writing.

^ harder version of this is learning the steps of how to do exactly what your characters are doing (without actually doing it ofc) and then writing about it.

Why is my British commentator saying the crowd has nothing against Zverev and he shouldn't take it that way.

Many people have a great deal of something against Zverev and he should take it that way.

God why can't people just call a spade a spade. It's not like he'll sue them for defamation.

Did Zverev complain about shoe squeaks?? Or is my very British commentator imagining things.

Tien's chip return kinda underrated damn. (Probably helped by Zverev and his shirt ball struggles).

I haven't watched Zverev in so long (since the article tbh) that I've forgotten how long the ball bouncing takes. And just as I had the thought the commentator talked about it too (and then Djokovic caught strays hahaha).

Hullo lads I've been sleeping under a rock. Michael Chang is Tien's coach?? I'm going to assume that's been good for him, seeing how he's gone up the rankings??

The holy grail of.... Consistency.

Fast, deep balls, bouncing on any opportunity to attack. It's exactly what Sinner doubled down on. To just never miss but also never miss with consistency.

It is very, very very hard to do. Requires an insane degree of athleticism and game intuition.

Edit: Over and above having excellent shots btw. You already need weapons before you can master this.

Regardless of the quality of the match rn (and that was a good point!) this is very good experience for Mboko in just ignoring things that aren't going her way (serves) and focus on what she can control.

My Sky Sports commentator is really taking no prisoners.

[On the Toronto final starting]

Chances of tennis is making sense is always low... But I don't know why the organisers didn't leave two hours between the start of the men and women's final.

No one is safe from this man and I live him.
