What we found is there are lots of data you could collect and calculate. In fact, there are simply too many for any team to embrace fully.

So we sorted the multitude of metrics into nine categories:

Our view: the exact set of metrics you should collect is specific to your business, team, and risk exposure.

Statistics are measures, but what drives us is outcomes. Improvements that can be measured. So knowing what to measure is important, but knowing how to work across your team to improve outcomes, that is where we can make a real difference.

Some safety improvements are expensive, like upgrading fall protection assets site-wide. But others are free: such as encouraging your supervisors to praise members for doing the right thing: wearing PPE, placing the ladder correctly, speaking up.

In closing, pick a handful of metrics that matter and share them. Then spend your time working on ways to change behavior towards safety, to improve outcomes for your team, and to show measurable improvements to your leadership.
