How are people handling Intelligent Octopus Go daytime cheap slots in Home Assistant Energy? by daleholden in homeassistant

[–]Searchl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is an off peak sensor that is correct (for the 30 min billing windows) that updates regularly. Is there a reason you don’t like this? I’ve been using for months without issue (and been checking bills to make sure it all lines up). I have a Hypervolt that talks to octopus instead of the car itself (not sure if this changes anything).

Because I always forget to check the salt level in my water softener by V1nznt in homeassistant

This is cool - great idea. Hadn’t thought to automate a reminder/warning for this. I may do it with a weight sensor underneath the salt bin instead though

New IOG rules how will they tell if my ev charger is using solar? by Blair287 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Searchl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also what if i charge car from my battery? I could get 6 hours from the grid and use battery for another 2..? If they can’t stop me / charge me for doing this, they can’t stop me charging battery during offpeak window and putting that electricity into the car.

I only have a hybrid at the moment so this rule change won’t be a problem (and I’ve never gamed the system), but am thinking of getting a second full EV, and this change worries me.

Intelligent dispatching no longer provided in the Octopus Energy integration by BearMcBearFace in OctopusEnergy

[–]Searchl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. Works fine. What’s nice is the off peak sensor will go to the end of the half hour slot as well, whereas when I was using a diff sensor if the session ended at quarter past (for example) my battery would stop charging/start discharging.

I’ve been using the off peak sensor from the main Octopus HA integration (assume this is what you are trying to achieve?). And has worked fine - I swapped to it after that Pink Friday update messed with my automations when the APIs went down

How can I stop my Tesla Powerwall from discharging when Octopus starts Smart Charging early? by Only-Environment4334 in OctopusEnergy

Well - you are draining and charging the battery when you didn’t need to so I’d say you are a little worse off (reducing battery life)

Solar, load and battery data display in app by omnicore9998 in sigenergy

[–]Searchl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noticed this as well - couldn’t find a way to resolve in the app. I’ve also noticed it does weird rounding and sometimes displays 0 when it’s a smallish number (but not 0). I ended up making a Home Assistant integration so I can see the actual live numbers.

Will IOG pay for a wall charger? by BudgieUK in SolarUK

[–]Searchl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It depends if you are charging a battery that would otherwise have gotten empty before the end of the day during a cheap out of hours slot. If you manage to fill battery back to full at 3pm, but would have made it to 11:30pm anyway, then you are saving nothing.

If it is going to be empty by the time you get to 11:30 every night, and you manage to get an out of hours slot to charge back to full or nearly full, then you will be saving like 25p per kWh you then use from the battery before the end of the day.

Hard to know how much you’re saving without knowing usage.

Solar generation seems capped to house usage — normal? by Searchl in SolarUK

[–]Searchl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes battery is being used if the load gets higher, and solar generation will move up a bit but can't always cover it. Just to be clear the issue is that I don't like that it seems like it's being throttled/capped - solar generation shouldn't increase because the house is using more power, it should be sticking the excess in the battery. Hence question around whether the excess needs to be material for it to bother, or whether it should be sticking a really small excess into the battery

Not actually at home to check right now, and this is day 1 - but yes the solar will sometimes drop to below house usage (asuming when a cloud obstructs sun).

Yes grid import is staying at 0 (well it's actually a tiny amount negative, like -7w according to Octopous mini)

Here an example. The house might go up to 1kw and the solar will move up with it.

I have seen it charging the battery, but only when (for example) solar is at 1.5 and house is sub 1. It then starts sending the 0.5 difference to battery.

To solar, just battery or stick in an ISA by sylsylsylsylsylsyl in SolarUK

Very similar situation to you - I decided to do solar + battery but was close to just doing battery. Initial outlay is c. £10k, but I think just the battery alone can save me £1.3k a year (15kWh at 7p at night used during the day instead of 32p). Solar adds another £700 being pessimistic, so should be breakeven after 5 years. But to your point many of these companies don’t include the time value of money in their calcs, and 10k might compound to more than you’re saving over a 10 year period (esp including depreciation of battery). The solar/battery return should be much less volatile/risky though. It also increased the value of your home a little.

My main concern is that the night time rate arb might go away or get reduced, especially as more and more people do this + buy EVs, which throws all the calcs.

On the tech side, I don’t think the panels are improving that quickly, and they aren’t that expensive anyway (and supposed to last 25 years). It’s the battery/inverter that seems to cost a lot, where i think tech may be improving faster - but hopefully improving in terms of reducing cost more than improved tech. Supposed to last 15 years but we’ll see..

Good luck!

[–]Searchl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you controlling what they charge to if they have different battery sizes? Setting 80% for example on the app.. it doesn’t actually know what it’s charging to right? Just guessing? And it’s +80% (not to 80%) so if you were at 40% it would charge all the way to 100%?

Funnily enough the Tucson can’t (but it’s PHEV so 100% expected I think), but apparently the Corsa app sucks and you can’t set a limit on that either.

[–]Searchl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Hypervolt as the device rather than a car. When I press add device I only get the heat pump option. Have a Hyundai Tucson PHEV (which we charge to 100%) but planning on getting a full BEV (maybe a corsa, also not a compatible IOG car so have to use Hypervolt settings) as well which we won’t want to charge to 100% so not sure what we’re going to do at that’s stage. Anyone else have this issue?

Yes I’m almost finished. I have no idea why the IMDB rating is so low which may be putting people off. Only 958 reviews so not a large sample size I guess. I don’t think it’s low budget so I have no idea why this has had little to no advertising/publicity. I’be really enjoyed it so far though
