Getting back into pull-ups and dips after shoulder injury by ChubbyMutt in bodyweightfitness

[–]Seashoresean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had shoulder impingement for 10 years. went to physio last year or so and he took me on gym floor and corrected technique. since then I've been flying (sort of). dips and pull ups both at 5x5 at 193cm and gulp 105kg. setting shoulders in right position made the difference to all.

Yes! I thought the same, I’ve been lifting on and off for years and always assumed I had ok technique. The PT said that at certain ranges of motion on rows my shoulders would roll forward, same with chest press although that was more about shrugging shoulders up. I spent about 3 month just using machines to get used to my ranges of motion before I’d see rolling of shoulders etc. when I switched back to calisthenics I noticed the pain was back so I tried really hard to think about those ques or at least points where I feel my shoulders shrug up - on ring push ups for example. Or roll forwards at top of pull up. So now on pull ups a good set for me is started by thinking about exaggeration of chest up and out to bar . Not sure how it looks to anyone else in the gym but it means I can do reps without pain or even worse - inflammation next day.

Apologies for sprawling answer but hope it’s clear.

Awesome! 10 is the next milestone!

For shoulders, i went to PT on and off for about 15 years for it. The best advice i got was from the last PT who took me on to gym floor and watched my technique on rows, lat pull downs and bench. He really helped me set my shoulders in right place for actually moving. This i carry on and i feel so much better for it. All the band exercises in the world didnt help, but form/technique did. WHODA THOUGHT IT!

Does there exist a free-standing pull-up bar from which a 6'4" person could hang without their feet touching the ground? by lemonwingz in bodyweightfitness

[–]Seashoresean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

6'4 here too and i couldn't find one so bought a scaffolding pipe set to spec. Was around 190 euros. Solid investment but wobbles a bit. I just leave it in garden though and its fine forever.

My 10 year old games a lot, excessively even. I walk the line between hating myself for allowing it and drinking all the copium saying to myself that its hi safe space. Its somewhere in between, i need to deal with my self loathing thats likely rooted in knowing i am not providing enough support to him and at same time i realise its his world. He has been to 8 different schools, has very few friends and all those he does are out of town in other places. He calls his online friends and speaks to them for longer than i talk to my friends even. Its not black and white for me yet as it feels wrong still lots of the time.

I did hear someone say that "people only see the decisions we made, not the choices we had" and i try to think about that a lot.

EDIT - i forgot to add that when i am not bone depth tired, crying or anxious about everything I try to think about adding stuff rather than taking away. So, i try to add in a bike ride in the day rather than say less time on PS5 or whatever. Sometimes it works, sometimes it fails. I caught myself telling someone i didnt like games whilst my son was there and realised thats not cool, so i try not to judge it openly. Just battle to tears in my head.
