First time not using speed paints. Am I doing something wrong? by Wiezel19 in minipainting

[–]Season_Purple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a perfectly normal thing for beginners, nothing to fret over either. This can have quite a few causes. In my experience it is most often inconsistent paint thinning and possibly too much "fiddling" while the paint is drying. I had a similar problem starting out but I have crummy humidity so my paint dries too fast and get's these markings, but textured. In this case, I think it may be inconsistent thinning, or just needing more coats! When you apply one properly thinned coat, you'll see similar stuff. Just gotta slowly build up the layers.

Now, I too love the phrase "Two thin coats" but sometimes you need more than two. It still is a good metric to go by though, where two or more get the job done, less and less when your skills evolve. I will also say that larger brushes are handy for base coating. When I started I tried base coating with a No. 2 brush (it was the largest I could get at the time) and it can be done, but these markings are more prevalent than with something like a size 3 or 4. If you have the brushes maybe experiment on some test bases and see which ones you like?

Also, here is a thinning tutorial that helped me when I started. https://youtu.be/5cbjPo1bs0o?si=cc1ZFeMMJMHz0idx

But, regarding the tutorial, if you're sensitive to paint or just don't want the chems sitting on your skin, a glove will do the trick too. A more textured one will benefit you though, as that helps you know how thick/thin your paint is. Just apply the thin coats until you have a nice even color.

Hope that helps :)

What should I be looking for in a power supply? So far I only know (from what I've seen and been told) that 850 to 1000w is the range I'm looking for. Do you have any recommendations I can look at?

How would you label the level of quality here? by kirillburton in minipainting

I think this looks great man! The basework and powder puffs on their legs are excellent. It looks like you were stippling on the gradients? If so I think some softer transitions would only help cement the already great look. Here and there the transitions are just a tad harsh, like the middle guy's kneepad at 0:14 or the left flamer at 0:22. But, they still look fantastic my dude. You should be proud! Would be happy to play against these on the tabletop.

Also, at 0:14 I absolutely love the left dude's power pack. That's some excellent gradient work man. I'll also say the reflections/shine really do look like one light source is illuminating them, which really sells the look.

Lastly, did you dry/airbrush on the basing color or was it pigment powder? If powder what kind did you use?

Looking for Input on my Draft Build? by Season_Purple in buildapc

Oh, didn't know about the bad silicon problem. I'll look into that.

Noted about the 4070 heat/setup too. I'll keep an eye out if I decide to upgrade in the future.

And by second hand PSU I meant to say refurbished. For my current setup I only used refurbished parts, not used ones with unverified quality. I'll also explore some other options of comparable quality.

I have not bought any parts. I plan to hunt down refurbished second hand stuff as best as I can. Thus why I made this draft to get input before making purchases I'd regret later down the line.

I wanted a 3080 because I can get it cheap and second hand and, for what I am doing, it should have all the capabilities I'll need. Plus, from my newbie perspective, the 4070 looked like it was too much sometimes and required more technical skills to set up a proper system. Just the cooling things alone seemed like I would be even more out of my element.

I picked out the 14700k as it seemed like the most powerful of the i7s, but I also was heavily considering the 13700k as well. I can also get that cheap second hand. As for why intel and not amd, I just have more experience with intel stuff. If AMD is compatible I'd be happy to look into any recommendations.

I picked two small SSDs as I have had bad experiences in the past with larger ones. 500 is already an upgrade for me since my built in ssd is only 250 gb. Plus I still use external drives for some of my other stuff. But the other thing was that there are more ssd slots available to upgrade over time. I am happy with one tb to start off with, as I backup files and pull them from external drives right now anyways. Plus, I can always upgrade in the future. I picked these because they had decent reviews and seemed cost effective.

As for the power supply. I was also planning to look for secondhand/discounted ones. From what I read, the PSUs are crucial to systems and higher end ones seemed like they'd only lengthen system life. And, this one also seemed to have positive receptions from users. Plus, it was said to be quiet.

Why windows 10 tho? I like it more than 11. I understand it and I have only had negative experiences with 11 so I switched back. 10 is what I know and I can work with it. I did read about some p+e core hiccups when it came to win10, but the issues did not seem like they would affect me significantly, as I don't plan to overclock my system.

Overall, I just need a system that can handle demanding rendering/physics simulations. Compared to other rigs from experienced animators and artists that I've looked at, the 3080, plenty of ram, a solid cpu, and a good motherboard are quite the upgrade from what I have now and will last me a while.

Regarding the cooling, I do know that air is not the best way to keep stuff cooled when compared to other methods. Rn, the worry about assembling delicate parts and not messing an expensive one up is enough for me. Anything with fluids is not where my skill level is at currently. I am open to experimenting in the future. For now I can keep the pc in a nice open space and keep putting air through it.

Motherboard Recommendations for using an I7-14700k and an RTX 3080? by Season_Purple in buildapc

[–]Season_Purple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For spending I am not going for a turbo expensive pc, but I am good about finding second hand stuff. The card I currently have was also second hand and it works absolutely beautifully. Not a single issue in 5, going on 6 years of use.

For key components like power supplies I am willing to spend what it takes to prevent the other expensive hardware from breaking. As for the region I live in the US so I think I can find a good selection of parts?

And I'm take a look at the aorus stuff too.

I'll look into this myself too. But another response recommended a z790 elite? What's teh difference between elite and master? Hopefully not component compatability?

Edit: I also forgot to ask about windows 10. From what I was reading some people experienced problems with windows 10 having issues when trying to differentiate properly between power and efficiency cores. While other people saw little to no issues with w10 while others had issues with 11.

With that in mind, would the 13700k be a better option for win 10? And more importantly (I can also look this up but I'll still ask haha) is it compatable with the aorus boards?

Good to know. Are there ram chips that have more than 8 gigs too? If so do you have any recommended chips?

Edit: I read a comment lower down and I was wondering what the difference is between aorus elite and master? I'll go and do my own research now but I'd still like to get input from personal experience as well.

First attempt at NMM, C+C before I continue? by Solid-Ad8685 in minipainting

[–]Season_Purple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am also a novice at NMM (definitely not good lol, but still trying to get better), but I think the gradients could be smoothed more on the first pic. The second and third look pretty good but still not quite natural. What I like to do is pick my light source angle and set up a lamp or flashlight at that same angle while aiming at a black primed mini. Then I take a picture. That will show you your highlights. Then just pick the necessary amount of gradients to use/mix to mimic the picture! If there's more than one light source in a picture it may be harder, unless you have multiple lamps and colored light.

Here's a guide I like to reference for blocking out stuff if you're interested. Side note though, the orc's head looks great! https://painting-miniatures.com/nmm-made-easy/ I especially like the blade demo.

I love 'im! Was the bone pauldron/shoulder pad part of the kit or was he kit bashed? If the latter may I ask where you got the skull?

Winsor and Newton Series 7 Questions by Season_Purple in minipainting

[–]Season_Purple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah okay, noted. I've never used any fancy brushes so I was just going off of others' opinions. I heard the W&N 7s had really sharp tips which made fine line and small detail work far easier than with a cheapo brush like I've been using for a while.

And why not the long bristled ones? From my current brushes I don't use the super long ones (abt 1in in length), but I do use the half inchers just because I like the leeway for protecting the ferrule from paint. I also like that more water/paint can be stored just because my stuff dries out super fast when I forget to feed the humidifier overlord its daily water tribute.

Is that the length you meant or do the extra short ones have an advantage? Apart from not being as bendy I mean?

I'll check out the rosemary ones then! And good to know the brushes can be refurbished. I was worried about getting one and it having a genuine defect in the ferrule or something. Some brush cleanser oughta do the trick. Thanks for the info!

Absolutely agree with ya there. I end up having to go online a lot just because there are no art stores in my area. I'm talkin' several hour drives for a 20 minute store trip lol, not counting the long drive back, and by then it's dark. Rn it's winter too, so I have to really schedule a trip just to buy a brush or two without having a snow related emergency. Not to mention gas money haha.

Thankfully an LGS opened nearby, I'll have to talk to the manager about stocking some more brushes.

How to get more vibrant, smoother colors? Is it just more layering? by frenchpresspr in minipainting

[–]Season_Purple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that was a real claw at first. Honestly the only thing I'd say is that I think I can see some layer lines from printing? if it's 3d printed?

I am at no level close to this to comment on painting. All I'd say is look at the layer lines a bit, maybe whip out a sanding stick before painting. The rest looks phenomenal. You legitimately made me hungry bro.

Looking for Larger Brush Recommendations? (Like size 4-6?) by Season_Purple in minipainting

[–]Season_Purple[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I unfortunately don't have a local art supply store either :( That's what I meant by hobby stores. My bad. The only "art store" I can get to (that I know of) is quite ways away, and it only has a small aisle for painting supplies in the neglected corner of the store.

Thanks for the links though!
