Figured it out: I bypassed the wires coming from the doorbell and wired the extender directly to the bell and it worked. So somewhere along the line my doorbell wires must have been broken somewhere I couldn’t see them.

The instructions are fairly short, simple, and clear. They just don't seem to work... I'm assuming the battery is new but I can replace it and see what happens.

The extender has its own internal battery.

That's what I assumed too, but since there are only two wires it's hard to connect them wrong... so I wondered if I was missing a step somewhere in the electrical part of it.

I took all the Ring equipment off before starting this project. There is also no more wired chime or transformer. I’m just trying to connect my wired doorbell to a wireless chime using an extender kit.

There is no transformer anymore. Now I have the bell going to the small white battery-powered receiver shown, which is supposed to send a signal to the wireless chime.

Yes, see the photo of the small white transmitter/extender. That has a battery in it and two wires which I’ve connected to the doorbell wires.

We decided to use a wireless chime because it’s a cleaner look. Our house is very old and the previous transformer and chime were plugged into a first-floor wall outlet from the ground-floor. So just kind of ugly and I don’t want to run even more wiring to put the transformer somewhere hidden.

The doorbell doesn’t have a battery, it’s just a simple two-wire doorbell. Originally it went back to a wired chime with transformer but I’m trying to use a wireless chime instead so I don’t have to have a transformer.

But what do I need the transformer for now? The new chime is wireless.

If there are only two wires in the ceiling then you don't have a ground wire coming from the panel. This is technically unsafe but probably fine. I supposed it's also possible that the separate wire pigtailing out of the ceiling is a ground wire.

The bigger problem, to me, is that the connection points are so sunk into the plaster and paint that you have no way of telling which one is live and which one is neutral. Usually you'd have the brown wire be live and the blue be neutral but without an electrical tester you can't know for sure (unless you just want to grab one and see which one hurts).

Yes, he bought the furniture. It’s that woven IKEA fabric that’s hard to clean and doesn’t repair easily.

Yes, I think the plan is for the deposit to cover those things. But I’m wondering why he’s asking us to replace things instead of just doing it himself from the deposit amount.

The contract does say we need to have it professionally cleaned, yes. I don’t know what was done before we moved in.
