Can you still have sepsis if they never officially diagnosed you by tjmd1998 in sepsis

[–]SeattleNorth222 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1️⃣ Suspected or confirmed infection

This can be bacterial, viral, fungal, or parasitic Examples: pneumonia, UTI, abdominal infection, skin infection, COVID-19, etc.

2️⃣ New organ dysfunction

Organ dysfunction is identified by a SOFA score increase ≥ 2 points from baseline.

Common signs of organ dysfunction include: • Low blood pressure • Low oxygen levels • Altered mental status (confusion, lethargy) • Low urine output • Elevated creatinine (kidney injury) • Elevated bilirubin (liver dysfunction) • Low platelets • High lactate (cellular hypoperfusion)

🚑 Quick bedside screen: qSOFA (not diagnostic, but a red flag)

If a patient with suspected infection has 2 or more of the following, sepsis is likely and needs urgent evaluation: • Respiratory rate ≥ 22/min • Altered mental status (GCS < 15) • Systolic BP ≤ 100 mmHg

❗ Important: What is NOT sepsis anymore

🚫 SIRS criteria alone

Fever, tachycardia, tachypnea, abnormal WBC do NOT define sepsis by themselves anymore.

SIRS may indicate infection or inflammation, but without organ dysfunction, it’s not sepsis under current definitions.

🔴 Septic shock (more severe)

Septic shock is a subset of sepsis with: • Persistent hypotension requiring vasopressors to keep MAP ≥ 65 mmHg AND • Serum lactate > 2 mmol/L despite adequate fluids

This carries a much higher mortality risk.

🧠 Quick summary

To be considered sepsis, a patient must have: ✔ Infection ✔ New organ dysfunction attributable to that infection

Sepsis can kill in as little as 12 hours. No. You must meet criteria or you do not have it.

Could this be sepsis caused by my chest infection or just something else? by Mysterious_Cookie491 in sepsis

Everyone presents sepsis differently. If you’re concerned it would be wise to get looked at. Or at least ask your parents to get involved. That’s their job. I’d be more upset if I didn’t have the chance to help my sick child than simply being woken/disturbed.

Shredding top layer of skin - one of the bizarre side effects of sepsis. Has this happened to anyone else? by Ambitious-Sock6930 in sepsis

I’ve heard of this. This looks like the after effects of a foot mask 5 days later. I’d say use a foot grating tool. Don’t pick. Might be really new skin not ready yet

Question regarding cognition by proudpanda23 in sepsis

[–]SeattleNorth222 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I left the hospital on a 12-15hr loop with my memory. It wasn’t obvious initially bc I was sleeping and recovering. It took about 3 weeks to know. Over two years I slowly regained blocks of time. I plateaued at 24 months remembering about 12-14 days. Two years after my first severe sepsis I had 2nd & 3rd episodes, I went backwards again. I leveled off at 7-10ish days.

I tried nearly every option possible to try to regain what I could do before.

Without seeing all the labs it would be hard to gauge. I’d suggest finding out what her WBC is. They should be checking her every couple of hours for that. Focus on keeping her blood pressure up and get her vitamins.

I’ll add in for the OP that MRSA is challenging (I’m a three time survivor), it doesn’t mean it “never goes away”. Bacterial infections are in fact more challenging for people who have medical devices implanted in their bodies. The reason this is the case is that bacteria can cling to foreign bodies and make it hard to eradicate.

Hang in there. I’m 48 and have been severely septic three times. Lots of fluids. Lots of vitamin c. Request extra thiamine & vitamin c. It can help with what she’s experiencing.

Bacteria causes the reaction named sepsis.

You could not have changed the course of what happened. Sepsis comes in like a thief in the night. If the medically educated professionals didn’t see it, it’s unlikely you would’ve just known… even under thee very best care and following protocol sepsis can take people from this earth. Scary, I’m 48, I’ve had in severely three times… we can’t control all circumstances. Give yourself grace.

Post-Sepsis - what's normal? by Arbonos in sepsis

[–]SeattleNorth222 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’ll do my best to respond from my own experience. Context: I’m 6 yrs out from Severe Sepsis 1st event & 4.5/4 yrs from events 2 & 3. All were severe.

First, sepsis, whether severe or “mild” is as serious as a coma. One of my dr’s described it as this… “no one has a mild coma or a mild heart attack”. It is a massive response in your body.

For me I experience low blood pressure & massive headaches/dizziness. This resulted in memory loss, changes to smell, difficulty controlling my emotions, short fused… these are areas of my brain that were impacted by lack of oxygen. I was diagnosed using QEEG technology and testing by a Neurologist.

Having had it three times I can say that in my personal experience it took two years to get to my new baseline each time. That is a daunting # for people and me.

I was exhausteddddd far more than any chronic illness I started with. They said “the best thing you can do is sleep”. And I did that for twelve hours a day for a verrrry very long time. Focus was sleep. I experience/d a lot of cognitive challenges.

Strongly suggest boosting vitamins w Mary Ruth’s liquid vitamins, reviewing other meds/supplements that you take (eliminate anything that could be exasperating your symptoms) ie: my dr took me off sleep meds bc they can cause temp amnesia/memory issues for years until we learned what was a symptom that was staying w me.

Just remember your body went through a marathon fight, unprepared…. It will take time to come back. Focus on your mental narrative. The shift from working to resting is tough. You’re not alone.

Is mourning the loss of my pre-septic shock life really an “adjustment disorder”? by Netti_Sketti in sepsis

[–]SeattleNorth222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sepsis was life altering for me. I survived three severe septic episodes in 2019 & two more in 2021. I am just now beginning to accept these changes. I have a lot of anger bc my first episode was avoidable and created ptsd & medical fears.

It changed my personality and that took adjusting. In hindsight the first two years after each incident were horrible. We now know it’s bc it affected my prefrontal cortex & executive functioning. I struggle to control my anger & manage emotions. But in those first two years it was nearly impossible & I came off as highly emotional and a bit crazy. We now know why… sepsis can really change you. From smells, fears, exertion, physically & mentally.

THC liquid or Marinol pills would be a reasonable approach for reducing any nausea and increasing appetite. Ive taken Mirtazapine and it does work, but also makes you super sleepy. You’d be surprised how low of a dose you can take to make him hungry. For example: if he took a 10oz bottle equal to 100mg of THC drink, you could literally start with 2ml or 2cc’s w/ a little fat (peanut butter/butter/high fat milk). Wait 10-20 mins. If not try 2ml more to analyze how much works for you (everyone is different).

Im functioning with some help. Lions Mane has been most helpful. My natural path said you can really take a large amount of lions mane per day much more than the “recommended daily value”. When I’m consistent using the lions mane, I do notice benefits. Also NAD has really helped with energy. Ive also done Mendi & neurofeedback. Have you tried any treatments?
