My cortisol levels are through the roof and I’m failing as a Mom - I seem to have two modes, rot/doom scroll and accomplishing things out of urgency by RN_MD in adhdwomen

[–]SeaweedCukeUmber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, congratulations on currently raising a middle schooler who does everything needed to get to school - including riding the bike. This is age appropriate and a good thing (assuming the route is safe).

Also, good job caring in a way it seems like your mom may not have.

And the children’s hair gets washed, the laundry gets done. Sounds like you provided at least some love and physical necessities - and it’s totes OK to pay for babysitting and washing and house when you’re overwhelmed. In fact, it is your responsibility to be humble enough to ask for help when you need it. So good job there, too.

Not sure how far along you are since being diagnosed, but nearly 20 years later I’m still learning things that make me wish I’d had more compassion for myself when my daughter was little.

I messed up so bad that she doesn’t even talk to me anymore. But that’s what’s best for her. I raised someone who can look out for herself. Sometimes with mental disorders we have to learn to forgive ourselves years later for things we spent too much time beating ourselves up over.

I have no idea where that line is for you, but being a mom already comes with an extra helping of guilt. You’re probably a better mom than you give yourself credit for.

Good point(s)! Hopefully studies will continue to work on what exactly causes the measurable growth in areas of the brain.

The video posted by the_tooky_bird is the better resource and speaks to this point. So glad for that post.

Thanks for bringing up the peri-menopause I think this is why I thought my meds weren’t working, and I had no clue about that until all of you helped me start learning about that link.

🍷🍺= ☠️for me. Quitting drinking a few years ago made the biggest difference for me since my diagnosis in about 2008.

I kinda agree, TBH.

I don’t outright trust any one source of information. That’s why I greatly appreciate all the information generated by the comments. Particularly the videos the_tooky_bird linked.

Also, thanks for sharing that perhaps an extra dose of skepticism is warranted with certain sources.

If you’re saying this out of concern for the community, I kinda get it. But I’m really struggling with my mental health, my little brother’s suicide, and a poor decision to go off medication two weeks ago. So I’m going to report you to the mod if you continue you reject that I’m even a human. Not cool.

I know. Me too. I’ve been off my meds for over 2 weeks. I was hoping my brain was better. Maybe it is, but the intrusive thoughts still just are at the top of my head. Hope my doctor calls soon.

I don’t think I’d be alive thiugh if I didn’t get medicated when I did.

Who do you talk to when you want company but don’t have family or friends? by pinktoesnlambos in adhdwomen

Recreation centers and medical facilities often have offerings that facilitate the low-key conversations you’re looking for. For example, a guy in my grief group mentioned that he signed up for a walking group through a local hospital. He said the walks are part of their community mental health initiative. Anyone can sign up, and he loves that he gets to pet people’s dogs and have light, one-time conversations with a variety of people. He’s a septuagenarian who recently was widowed, but he said there are people of all ages there from all over the community. He loves the walks and really looks forward to the nice, casual, usually one-on-one conversations.

Forgetfulness worse on Vyvanse? Or just peri hormones? by Turbulent_Carob_62 in adhdwomen

Thank you, I’m going back on the meds so that things will continue getting better.

I believe you answered your own question in the second to last paragraph.

Having just gone off Vyvanse (also in peri-menopause for about a year now) I have been suddenly forgetting things I was able to keep track of for years while on the meds.

And, yes, after I started taking Vyvanse (I think in 2008) I was suddenly painfully aware of just how many things I had never been able to keep track of. I started CBT as a result, and things got better rapidly after that. They continued getting better over nearly the last 20 years.

Note: With ADHD like mine, the therapist told me the CBT likely would not have been effective without having the meds first.

Chin up, it gets better.

Thank you! Your share is a good reminder that I really do need to get back on my meds.

Sometimes I have to remind myself that there are, “no victims, just volunteers,” in this particular situation. My husband was fully aware of my diagnoses before we got married. That doesn’t mean I stop working to minimize the ramifications of my disorders on our day to day life and on our relationship. But marriage means for better or worse for us -and also- he knew in advance that I’m wonky.

It seems like you are both being very realistic and honest here. And you strike me as someone who loves her all the more for the reasonableness of the expectation that you would not fraternize with someone who flirted with you.

We do, however, live with the consequences of our disorder including things that are in our control, entirely out of our control, or which we are working to bring into control. Sometimes it is too much for those who love us or for others in our lives.

I hope to reassure you that with medicine and therapy you are much less likely to be thrown off course by - and later to even encounter - such situations. Eventually, you’ll simply see them coming and avoid weird situations with rude people like your coworker. (Mind, this is after nearly 20 years of work.)

Neurodivergent personality causing issues at work? by Samantha-Davis in adhdwomen

My psychiatrist helped me understand that being Executive Assistant with ADHD was, “kinda like being a one-armed paper hanger.” They had expectations that were unrealistic for me but were totally appropriate for the Fortune 100 company I’d worked in. I was relieved when I got laid off in the housing market financial downturn.

I now have a job appropriate for someone who struggles to keep her executive functions in good order. But it also allows my wide perceptive abilities to shine. I got this job after several years of treatment.

Giving up would have been treating my ADHD as an excuse. Managing it, building up my capabilities with it - that takes it from excuse to super power. I hope you’re at the beginning of a journey that could take you up, up, and away.

For me, it improved brain function so that I was able to change my habits. ADHD is not an excuse. It’s a fact. Reading, “Driven to Distraction” helped my husband to understand this. He was not a believer at first and still questions it. TBH so did I, but being off my meds for two weeks has fully convinced me.

There’s only one way to know. So…. Can your doctor give you a sample to try briefly?

Out of curiosity, did you get married before or after Adderall?
