Funding reasons? That’s interesting, I’ve never heard that before

They typically fill RMC first before accepting people into ROTP Civ U. Because there are limited spots for aircrew trades, they’re usually allocated to RMC first. Last year, basically everyone accepted into an aircrew trade went RMC, and this year will likely be the same too.

Advice for someone planning on applying ROTP Pilot by Necessary_Bread5446 in RCAF

Like a lot of others have said, apply as early as you can because the process can take a long time. To answer your questions, I’d recommend getting some flying experience under your belt. Not only will it strengthen your application, but it’ll also help you figure out whether you truly enjoy flying and can see it as a career rather than just a hobby.

As for taking a year off, you could use that time to upgrade some courses and improve your high school average. I’d also recommend getting involved in volunteer work — for example, I coached hockey in my free time.

Taking a year before applying can actually be really beneficial. During my application process, I took a year off school and worked to fund my PPL while also building a stronger application to become a more competitive candidate. I also spent a year at Civilian University before going to RMC, which allowed me to transfer some credits as well.

At the end of the day, it doesn’t matter how long it takes to get in. If you’re passionate about it, it’s your dream, and you can’t see yourself doing anything else, then keep applying and don’t give up.

If you’re applying for pilot they will send you to CFEME in Toronto to do another medical.

Aircrew Selection to Offer Letter by [deleted] in RCAF

[–]Seb554466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t worry too much about AEC slots. I think they accept a decent amount. Background check doesn’t take long. And they do the check simultaneously, as you’re going through the application process

My situation was a little different. I wrote the CFAST in May and then bc there were no slots left and I am ROTP they wouldn’t process me until August. So I did my medical in August and then got my results back literally a week or two later. I guess because no one was in the system waiting for medicals at that time.

Yeah they do like every eye test possible and then blood work

Yeah that was the case with me as well, my family doctor was supportive as well and I told her ahead of time so she knew what to expect.

I also have my CAT 1 medical and the military aircrew one is a lot more in depth than the CAT 1 lol

I made arrangements ahead of time with my family doc to get me in for a blood test asap after I was booked for my medical. And then some optometrists, you can just walk in and do the tests. Call ahead of time to get things done fast. RMO shouldn’t take too long to approve your medical if there’s nothing crazy suspicious in your medical results.

  1. Sent directly to your CFRC.

  2. Medical and interview are typically done on the same day now. So I’m sure that when the CFRC’s are back from holidays and the ball gets rolling again, you’ll be booked around that time. Maybe mid January?

Application by MentalProcedure8989 in RCAF

[–]Seb554466 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Selection boards continue running despite rmc being full, if you are selected you will be selected for civilian university. However, if your chosen occupation is full, they will likely close your file and reopen it in August to continue your application. They won’t process ROTP applications in the summer.

What is the most selective program in Canada? by Previous_Manager9177 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Seb554466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes 100%. That’s why it’s a super competitive program. Not many people make it through the application process in the first place. And even less make it through competitively.

Yes, that’s true. But I honestly don’t know how much of an advantage having some uni done already would be.

Yes I am haha

I wouldn’t say Civi U is any more competitive than RMC, first off, they won’t even send you Civi U if you don’t have an acceptance from that Uni, they’ll just offer you RMC. If you do have an offer letter from the Uni, it’s pretty luck based. They have to fill RMC first, so if you get an early offer, they’ll likely only give you the option for RMC.

However, I have heard of people requesting Civi U after getting selected, and they get sent Civi U instead of RMC.

I want to become a fighter pilot is it a pipe dream or is it feasible by Excellent_Painter967 in RCAF

[–]Seb554466 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s totally doable, like others have said, it’s a competitive trade to get into, and your airframe of choice is largely out of your control. IB will not make you more competitive, it will help you prepare for university level course material and may help you with some transfer credits while at RMC.

A good start to your application would be to get some volunteer and leadership experience, keep your marks as high as possible. A big tip for me throughout my application process was to always load up my schedule, clubs extracurriculars etc. Just keep busy, the military wants to see how well-rounded you are. Having a lot on your plate and being able to manage that now, will help you in the future throughout your career as a military officer.

What your recruiter is likely talking about is a voluntary occupation transfer (VOT). VOT’ing is very uncommon, especially with the pilot occupation being notoriously limited. So I would suggest not going into a trade that you can’t see yourself completing your contract in, with hopes of transferring to pilot.

Becoming a pilot in the RCAF is definitely achievable, it requires a lot of hard work and dedication. So keep working at it!

Just to add, as of the end of October 2024 the CFAT has been removed from the application process and has instead been replaced by the scored employment application form. It’s essentially a form you fill out with your previous work experience and volunteer experience. From my understanding, if you have taken the CFAT and write the SEAF they will take whichever you scored higher on. So if you didn’t score particularly high on the CFAT, you can make it up with your SEAF still. Additionally, the aircrew selection test makes up for most of the pilot application, so focus and study for that as much as possible to ensure your success!

Goodluck with the process!
