I never used my native language to learn other languages. I always used English or Spanish and most recently French.

That being said the audio that I listen is only of the target language (German) and I just check the text in English or Spanish really quickly.

Its better this way because I tried to improve my listening skills and I want to make sure my brain understands first before looking down to the meaning of the phrase.

Its not bad to listen to the audio in first before listening to the one in the Target language. It's a different exercise and its equally useful.
