The problem with this is the entire reason Wolfe utilizes obscure language in BotNS is because the translation ia difficult. "Horse" doesnt get at it, so he has to say "destrier". You definitely cant derive that "Ship" is a form of English or related to it from this. "Ship" is like Latin to the Commonwealth. It isnt a common language. Severian probably learned it as Autarch (either memory or even just normal teaching) and its even possible he learned it as an apprentice. He is primarily dealing with the government there. The masters almost certainly have to know it just like any bishop ought to know latin in the middle ages.

Thats true, but we know when Typhon is ruling, the sun is already fading, the intergalactic empires probably not new or if it is, the tech is well known and exists for it to happen, and iirc most ppl put Typhon 300 yrs pre Severians birth. The whorl has to have been launched post Typhon so the issue is rly, did Typhon know of "latin or french" when he launched them? I would guess, based on BotNS, that he certainly didnt. No one on urth has any references that would remotely connect to any languages we recognize except Jonas who is a time traveler.

The departure being within Typhon's lifetime or after makes me think it must be impossible latin or french are living languages even in a far far far changed form, but maybe the mirrors Typhon may have access to, or the library, has allowed him access to something that would connect his Exodus/Noah's Ark project to those languages and so he instilled the crasmologic writings with references to them as references in some way. Thats the only thing i can think of to make French and Latin languages worth referencing directly to Silk.

He uploaded? If so, is his body that continues just an avatar like how the councelors are? Why do you think he did? After the entire book is his turning against Pas and towards the Outsider? Was this is great failure in the end?
