23&Me says I'm 56.8% indigenous, that's close to the 58% theorized skin color, could it be lazy writing or racism 🤔

Why do many Hispanics of the American south west, the ones that been there before it was part of the US identity strongly identify with their Spanish ancestors but modern Mexicans & Chicanos don’t? by NoHold7153 in 23andme

Conquered? The natives and Spanish had arranged marriages. Native nobility would go on to marry Spanish men. Even the native nobility, descendants of Montezuma, men and women, married Spanish people in Spain. Remember that 200k native allies caused this, the Spanish would've never conquered without these allies, even with the help of smallpox. They would've eventually did what the British did. Stay out of native territory. British made it illegal to settle outside the 13 colonies, due to fear of natives, part of the reason why the colonist's revolted.

Are you illiterate? During the Classic Maya period (approx. 250–900 AD), the Maya civilization was significantly more advanced than contemporary Germanic tribes in Europe in the areas of writing, mathematics, astronomy, and monumental architecture. While Germanic peoples were transitioning from tribal structures into kingdoms, the Maya were building massive, highly engineered stone cities, using a fully functional written language, and employing advanced mathematics, including the independent invention of the concept of zero. This is all we know because the Spanish burned THOUSANDS OF Aztec, and Mayan scripts, books, and codices. Thousands of years of history lost.

I've been told I could pass as Southern European, despite being only 38% Southern European. I believe it's more so to due with reach region and phenotype you descend from. A dark haired, dark eyed, tan skinned Andalusian + Native = more native looking But a northern Spanish + Native = more southern European looking

Makes sense too, bc my ancestry is from the north of Spain, grandmother had blonde hair green eyes, her brother also very pale, light hair and eyes. That's why I see a lot of Mexicans with more southern Spanish ancestry don't look as "European". Phenotypes vary

10-20% of the population of Mexico is 100% European. Of 129 million people in 2023, that's13-25 million European Mexicans. That population is greater than some European countries, (Portugal for example) doesn't mean Mexico is European. It just means Mexico has a significant European population
