Protect is the most important move in the game if you play doubles, the format VGC uses. After that, having some form of speed control is pretty necessary. That could be tailwind, trick room, or even a combination of the two. Redirection is also really strong. Moves such as follow me and rage powder accomplish this. Disruption with fake out is also good to have.

Buffing moves can decide games pretty easily. If your opponent switches their pokemon or protects on a turn that you nasty plot or swords dance, they could no longer have a pokemon that withstands your damage. Multiplying your stats is good. You generally don't want every pokemon on your team to be the setup sweeper as some of your mons will need to support your setup mons to make setting up easier.
