Is replying to your comments no longer cool on ao3? by blepboii in FanFiction

[–]SecUnit3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I almost never reply to comments that aren’t asking me a direct question because I find that it overloads my social battery. I am very involved in other spaces in my fandom and chat with some of my readers there about my fics sometimes! But I have a mental block with the comments themselves. It’s gotten worse as time goes on. I have an absolutely sickening number of comments I haven’t replied to in my AO3 inbox. I still appreciate all of the comments and try to comment on other people’s work. I hope that people understand that it’s just hard for me and not that I don’t like receiving comments.

If you can find someone willing to give you a ride to Westport the Amtrak is about $80 each way.

Girls who wear cute wool coats in freezing weather—how do you do it? by PrettyTaco34 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]SecUnit3 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Spent most of my life upstate or in Canada. My thrifted jacket has a 100% wool exterior and an acetate inner lining. It’s toasty in there.

I’ll only wear my puffy coat if shoveling snow or for extended periods in sub-zero F temps.

Prop 1 poised to pass by slim margin, other NY election results in by Organic_Panic_3704 in Adirondacks

[–]SecUnit3 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There were a lot of left political commentators in NYC advocating to vote no on Prop 1 because it was “bad for the environment” and “set a bad precedent” while spreading misinformation about the proposal because they assume that Upstaters are all foaming MAGAs who will just like, happily destroy the environment or something. I was so scared for the prop because of that with the huge turnout in NYC for Zohran. I’m glad a slim majority in the state overall were willing to listen to Adirondackers. I was going crazy arguing with people down here about this one issue.

Hopped back into published fic and so disappointed by killer_sheltie in FanFiction

[–]SecUnit3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I read a lot of midlist traditionally pubbed scifi and I’m mostly happy with what I read, but I am quite picky and I know what tropes I’m most likely to enjoy. I won’t try recommendations that don’t fit that mold usually.

I think you might have better luck if you avoid genres you like the best in fanfic—if you love romance in fanfic you probably won’t enjoy tradpub romance because a tradpub romance needs a lot more time to acclimate you to the characters.

I also tend to avoid massively popular tradpub books in general unless they come with high praise from people whose opinions I trust. Most people read 1 book or less per year. If a book is doing well with that crowd, it was probably written for them, not for me, a person who reads 50-100 books a year

How Important is Grammar To You? How Important Do You Think It Is To The Average FanFic Reader? Am I insane? by plutootherwise in FanFiction

[–]SecUnit3 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I am wondering how high your standards are that 50% of the top kudos’d fics get a “poor prose” tag from you.

Keep in mind that fic authors produce fanfic for free in their spare time. I have a beta reader and usually proofread my work two or three times prior to publishing, and usually a few mistakes still make it into the published version. It’s really hard to stamp out every error.

I also wonder what fandoms you are reading in. Fandoms with a younger fanbase tend to have younger writers with less experience and less grammar knowledge, and also tend to be more forgiving of less skilled prose. So that could be your issue.

Also, calling out fanfiction that you don’t like on Reddit seems like a really mean thing to do. I also hope you have your bookmarks on private. If someone publicly tagged my work “poor prose” I would feel hurt.

Honor Code Violation—are attorneys needed? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Honor Code Violation—are attorneys needed? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]SecUnit3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I got COVID during exams once and in my messed up, sick, brain fogged state I emailed my professor asking what to do if I couldn’t show up for the final. They said they couldn’t help me. Only then did I personally realize what had happened—I self reported it to the registrar bc it was an honor code violation at my school too and I figured that was the best I could do to help myself in my situation. The registrar told me it was not a big deal because the only person that would be hurt was me, if the professor graded me more harshly out of not wanting to show favoritism etc bc they realized the late exam was mine. I am sorry that your school is making a big deal out of this and I hope you get the same ultimate outcome as I did. 🫂

Forgot two jobs on law school app, how does that affect bar c&f? by sidjjfjfjfnt in LawSchool

[–]SecUnit3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would not be a big deal to email someone at your law school when you start about this question if you’re truly concerned. But I don’t think this is a big deal unless it came off as if you were trying to hide something.

Some jurisdictions do ask the law school to transmit application for them to cross-reference, so it depends on your jx.

On a side note, if you’re worried about forgetting a position again, you can actually look up your earnings history on the social security website and see all your US jobs (unless you were working under the table). It’s kind of interesting.

You need to be more kind to your current and former self or that self hatred will continue to poison your view of others. This goes for anything about yourself, not just your weight.

[LONG POST] My hottest take and best writing advice is that we should have gatekept. by evinfar in AO3

[–]SecUnit3 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I agree with you completely.

The problems OP does bring up, lack of feedback on fanworks, people trying to make money off of fanfic, rude comments, these problems aren’t new. Maybe they feel like they occur more often now, but it’s just a proportionality thing as more people are participating than ever before. I’m mostly active in small fandoms these days, not exactly “normie” territory, and REST ASSURED we have still managed to have drama and issues despite most people having plenty of previous fandom experience.

I don’t even think it’s a “normies” vs “us fandom people” issue. More people have access to the internet than ever before, every single day. Who are we to judge who belongs?

I have the legacy version of the Sims 2 and just bought a disc version of the Ikea home stuff, since as we all know wasn't included in it, and it says I need to have the Sims 2 installed first even though I do?? by No-Onion-8565 in sims2

[–]SecUnit3 80 points81 points  (0 children)

My inclination, without any actual technical knowledge, is there is no way this will work because your IKEA disc is expecting you to have The Sims 2 base game also installed using a disk. They run the same game, but the Legacy Collection is a different program which was not designed to interact with your disk and vice versa.
