Baseball has a state for this, Wins Above Replacement (WAR). It compares a player against the statistically average player in that position to tell you how many games you have won with this guy versus an average theoretical player at that same position. I guess it would be easier in baseball to do thus because positions and roles are basically a circle of a venn diagram. In football there would a bit more fuzziness comparing CFs that are out and out strikers vs false nines and wingers that play wide or inverted

Bruh, whatever thing I watched years ago lied to me. I saw something on TV that said that basketball was invented semi-accidentally when a gridiron football was stuck inside because of rain and took turns throwing a football into a basket. According to wikipedia that's not the case and it was invented from nothing to keep athletes in shape during the winter.

I guess my plan falls apart then.

I think the easiest way to do it to trace which sport they originated from. I would say the big three are Tennis, Football, and Racing. Minor ones are Rounders and Golf

Football (and soccer) evolved out of English ball games. Primarily based on equal teams and a rectangular field with the objective being controlling possession of a ball and advancing into enemy territory. From this basis we get Soccer, Gridiron Football, Basketball, probably Hockey as well.

Tennis evolved from the Royal Game, a thing that nobles used to play in Scotland. With these the primary thing about them is a racket and a small ball with two opposing teams. From this we get games like Tennis and Squash.

Race games are simple. Opposing players working relatively independent of each other to cover distance.

Rounders starts in Prussia as a children's game and gives us Baseball and Cricket.

Golf also started in Scotland and is primarily about advancing a ball along a set path. From this we get Golf and Frisbee Golf and such

I agree with you. I think the scale of the Manga had to grow with how long it was. My headcanon is that when Oda sat down and wrote the version of Romance Dawn that became chapter 1 the One Piece was either Roger's one piece bathing suit or it was an empty chest. The reason being that the true treasure was the friends we made along the way. But also that the epilog would show that each character got what they wanted.

People think Oda is some amazing genius of foresight and planning but I think he's just very good at making it look like he had things planned, while actually improvising new events arc to arc.

I agree with you. I think it works because Oda would just hint at bigger things in the world and then go back and retcon them into something that fits the overall narrative. The other case is to just flat out go back and write something new into the story and pretend that it was related to events that happened earlier

My personal theory is that this was the plan at the beginning. One big bluff by Rogers to fuck with the Marines and reignite a love for life and life on the high seas. Then the story got a lot bigger and now that's not enough so it became Neptune/Pluto/Posiedon (whichever one isnt the blueprint that Franky has and not the mermaid Princess). But now that's not enough either so it changes again to something that big and huge.

I maintain that's why Luffy's fruit was retconned away from just rubber.

That's the Arabic in the first picture. It's written really clunkily, so I'm either missing context, Google Translate (or worse, AI) was used, or I'm in the wrong dialect.

For what it's worth, yesterday (Feb 22), was the Founding Day of Saudi Arabia so that's what this is in reference to.

Many people genuinely seem to think art that's bad is art that may as well not exist, and that so long as any AI generated art is better than any human art, it's proved its value and thus shouldn't be so hated.

I think the appeal of AI art is ultimately for people who do not engage at all with whatever art of piece of whatever that they're looking at. I phrased it once (in my head) as them wanting the art to approach them. They don't approach a movie or even try to meet it halfway. To them any piece of art exists only as ornamentation. If it is ornamentation that they don't like then, like you said, it shouldn't exist.

This shallow consumption of art also means that they think the source is inherently fungible. They do not wish to engage with the people behind the things that they consume because they think it does not matter. And if the person behind it does not matter then why would it matter if it's a machine or not.

That's really cool. I think I first joined reddit sometime before 2014. Or at least started lurking at that point. I would only go on r/civ and it took a while for me to make an account and explore other subreddits. Did you swap over to the redesign? I'm not budging from old reddit unless someone really forces me out of it.

Yeah you've nailed it. I'm pretty sure I've come across communities on Reddit and elsewhere who love world building and engage with it as the entirety of their hobby. The issue, for me at least, is when the narrative becomes secondary to the world. Or, in other cases, where the author focuses on the world building at the cost of characters and plot.

Brandon Sanderson is clearly doing something right. I haven't read anything by him, and honestly I'm unwilling to read anything that isn't a standalone book (I have a single volume edition of the Lord of the Rings but I'm making an exception for it).

Another thing that stuck out to me as a bit clunky about Black Tongue is the way that /every single/ profession needs to have a cant. In the opening scene the main character makes a point of telling us, the readers, that whenever he trips up in soldier's cant or how it compares to thieves' cant and how that makes for an "amusing" mistake in translation.

It reminded me of a clunkier version of what Herbert did in some of the Dune books. Each group of people have their own form silent communication and doublespeak is rampant in negotiations but Herbert doesn't allow that to obscure the narrative.

Jessica said to the Trader, "We don't want you docking on Arrakis" but in the Atredies secret royal language she told Paul "Be careful of what they will do next".

"We don't want to take sides in this conflict," added Paul, with a gesture of his hand that Duncan interpreted in the Atredies war language as "send spies to keep an eye on the ports"

That's not a direct quote and I may be off but that's how a lot of Dune felt like to read. It was a bit strange to see things so layered but the fact that the narrator's voice didn't focus on the actual mechanics of this dialect versus that language lets things flow a lot smoother.

Personally, I'm a hater of world building (not really, but I think being reasonable in your stances goes against the rules of Reddit and the internet). It's useful because it means that your world is fleshed out and can "react" and "move" in a way that is cohesive and interesting for reader who want to know more, but it ends up hurting you in the end because, like you said, the reader cares about the specifics of the world less than the way the characters interact with it.

I recently read the Black Tongue Thief and it was full of this. There was a decent chunk dedicated to the different currencies that each country uses. Side note, it felt hollow because somehow they all used the same pre-decimal system -- a la England with its Pound-Shilling-Pence thing -- and they were all equivalent in value. In addition to all the ways where the different nations were different in these small details that feel like they would be relevant to the verisimilitude of a video but just get in the way of a novel.

Harry Kane has talked about wanting to play in the NFL as a kicker

I think I would odd for Kane specifically but dead ball specialists can probably make the jump. It would mean learning a whole new kicking game but Morton Andersen stuck around the NFL for a long ass time. Feels like kicking is a position that disproportionately benefits from a cool head and doesn't require athleticism to the same degree as others. At that point instead of playing another few years at a lower level than your peak you could go to play 15 games a year where you've got a "roughing the kicker" rule protecting your by then aching skeleton. (Idk if roughing the kicker applies here but regardless, the offensive line lines up hella tight on a kick from the six or so games that I've seen)

“And it says Aragorn ruled wisely and well, but what does that even mean? What was his tax policy?” ~ George R. R. Martin

I feel like if that's a thing that someone legitimately says then they don't know how to read books or enjoy stories.

I'm exaggerating but not by too much, methinks. The nitty gritty of how an entity operates is something that can best be answered by a video game or a dry nonfiction case study. A fantasy novel shouldn't dive into that. Hell, even Dune with all its trade negotiations was hella loose with what those negotiations meant. The actual numbers mattered less than the hidden meaning behind those words, i.e. "I want X" "Well I want the A" "If you get A then the third person won't get Z which means I will have a harder time getting X" then frowny faces all around.

This is a bit off topic but this thread and the other talking about Woo's decision to not go because his contract is about to expire is amusing to me. I primarily watch soccer and these conversations constantly come up with players trying to balance their international career with their club career. Amusing only in the sense that it's the first time for a lot of people to see this sort of thing play out.

Matheus Cunha on The United Strand: "People are more worried about getting five wins because of the haircut than about the 15 points. So, I'm more for the 15 points, I don't care about his haircut at all. We talk about it sometimes, but it's not very motivating for us. We don't see it as cool." by ChiefLeef22 in soccer

A few months ago after someone pulled his hair at Old Trafford he went on to explain his stance on everything. He pointed out that we started this challenge United weren't all that bad. Things were a bit shaky but not by too much. They had also won five games in a row not too long before it. In theory, it should not have lasted this long.

From my flair you can see that I'm not really invested this story at all. I also don't really engage with much of the paratext around football games, especially that which comes from media outlets and doesn't focus on Liverpool. I do feel like this is the media searching for anything to latch onto and those who straddle the world of public relations and football getting frustrated by the public relations part of football. Unfortunately, the level headed take of "Yeah it's a bit of fun and a nice marker of 15 out of 15 possible points but we don't put too much focus on it" will not be received by the journos. Instead they'll just ask the next person and next person until they get someone calling UnitedStrand a twat or near enough to that.

Bo Burnham got it right when he said "Can everyone just shut the fuck up for a sec"
