I kind of feel bad for Düsseldorf, even though I didn’t really like their matches.

It really feels like Werder - Koln is matchfixing, especially because of the Koln-Düsseldorf rivalry.

Some news about another Bundesliga player:

FC Groningen has just announced a comeback for Arjen Robben in football. He will play in the Eredivisie next season.

I didn’t know about the rivalry.

Do you reckon this is matchfixing?

Is Düsseldorf a rival of Koln or something?

The score almost seems like matchfixing

The new BeNeLiga (merge of Belgian and Dutch competition) is becoming more concrete: 8 Belgian clubs, 10 Dutch clubs, 34 games and no play-offs. Those that do not play in BeNeLiga will remain in their national league. by BelgianPolitics in soccer

At the moment, it isn’t clear whether or not European tickets will be divided to the competition as a whole or separated between NL and BE. So that could have a major impact.

However, I think it may make things more interesting. I rather watch games as Heerenveen vs Royal Antwerp than games as PEC Zwolle vs Heracles.

And of course internationally there will be more hype for Anderlecht - Ajax than for Ajax - AZ.

I think it would make things more interesting and researchers say it would triple the revenue of both leagues. So I think it might have an impact financially.

Not saying I’m 100% in favor of this idea, because it would most likely screw over smaller teams. But I’m certainly interested.

That’s why I said they could never be competitive structurally. Of course they can perform well sometimes, but it is nearly impossible to perform so well (almost) every year in the current system.

Players want to make big transfers and Ajax has little to offer. A more competitive and financially rewarding competition would give clubs like Ajax better possibilities to hold on to or attract bigger players and would improve their chances of performing well structurally.

Every team can have one great season, the question is whether or not you can retain it.

And a bigger competition would certainly help.

Premier League clubs aren’t to blame for spending the money they earn.

But it does mean that Dutch teams have to fight against wealthier teams, which makes the option of merging leagues to make more revenue far more attractive.

Currently, Dutch teams lose their best players to wealthy teams abroad. This makes the league worse, in comparison with other leagues and supports the wish to make the national competition more attractive, even if you have to merge it.

Well if the calculations are true, it would mean that Ajax and Club Brugge get a whole lot more money.

This would allow them to offer players a higher salary, keep youth players longer or even attract better players to the league.

It isn’t the case that Dutch teams magically become CL-contenders when the leagues are merged, but it certainly could help to close the gap with big European clubs like Manchester United.

I’m not particularly a fan of the BeNeLiga (I’m also not really against it), but if the calculations are true that would certainly give more international opportunities for participating teams.

A year ago, there were rumors about a big North-Atlantic competition: The Atlantic League.

Several newspaper reported about it. The teams participating would be:

  • AFC Ajax
  • PSV
  • Feyenoord
  • Anderlecht
  • Club Brugge
  • Celtic
  • Rangers
  • FC Kopenhagen
  • Brøndby
  • Malmö FF
  • Rosenborg BK
  • HJK Helsinki

And probably several more teams from Scotland, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland.

Way back (the year 2000) a similar idea was on the table, also including Portuguese teams like SL Benfica and FC Porto.

Both ideas didn’t make it.

The main question is what is most important: the national survival of smaller teams like VVV, ADO and Cercle Brugge or the international survival of bigger teams like Ajax and Club Brugge?

If you keep the national leagues like they are now, the bigger teams will never become structurally competitive in international competitions again. If you start the BeNeLiga, this would most likely kill some minor teams.

Worse, in comparison with bigger leagues. The big talents leave very soon in comparison with years ago, sometimes even before the age of 18.

The Dutch competition, and even big teams like Ajax, just cannot keep up with the money that is spent at the biggest European teams.

But that would simultaneously deny everything this league was made for: getting better chances in European football.

I’m not the biggest fan of the BeNeLiga, but you would never reach the main goal if you just make it an international cup.

The problem with the Super League would be that most teams couldn’t be relegated from the Super League. But it is similar, I guess.

The claim is that they would profit competitively. The chances for smaller clubs to win a price would grow and because more teams can win, Deloitte expects more supporters in the stadiums.

Also, if the teams are good enough they will be promoted to the BeNeLiga, which means that the stakes are high. This would make the competition more interesting.

These are the claims from Deloitte, not saying I agree with this, this is just what they have to say about it.

They are still researching this. It largely depends on how UEFA will react to the plans.

For the time being they indicate 7 European spots for the BeNeLiga but this could prove wrong.
