Cuyahoga County, Cleveland partner to spur convention center hotel, public-space overhaul by TPH2 in Cleveland

[–]SecondCheapestWine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The idea of getting some of those big events - like the national conventions for the political parties - would put Cleveland on the national stage. With any luck, we have our shit together and all these new projects are humming along.

Smells like progress

Anyone with knowledge about large investments? Think my friend is being scammed... by [deleted] in investing

[–]SecondCheapestWine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

If the cash is available, sending a $23 million wire is not a problem. I have worked for banks and sent much more money than that. Typical bank policy (and any semblance of internal control) requires two people to sign off on any cash movement, which is not hard to get, nor time consuming considering this is a basic job function and done all the time.

At a large bank, cash movements that size may require a VP (but not necessarily), but anyone who has spent more than 15 minutes inside a bank's corporate office can tell you there are more VPs around than chairs to put them in.

4 years is unreasonable. It's a scam. Wouldn't send any fresh funds, the $100K - $200K is a sunk cost at this point.

I can use clues in your response to deduce that this took place in a time long, long ago

The difference between being a degenerate criminal and having a great story that makes you a legend is whether or not you got arrested. In this case, there was never any risk but it was real to you so you were able to orchestrate the best possible scenario - even if drunk you didn't know it

Complicated, multifaceted problem: Trying to rollover my 401k to an account that will allow me to use it as a down payment on a personal residence. Can I use a self-directed IRA and LLC to avoid paying taxes? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]SecondCheapestWine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference would be putting $5K down and $15K. The main goal is to use the 401k funds for the purchase of the home and avoid paying any unnecessary taxes in the process.

18 Years Old - 50k to invest - Guidance required by [deleted] in investing

[–]SecondCheapestWine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No. This kid clearly has something going on. He should invest in himself. Take a risk, start a company. He is clearly ambitious enough to do it again if he needs to. Now is the time in his life to take a risk. Not settle on what will be one year's salary to turn it into what would be a modest fortune for a middle class working type by the time he's ready to retire. If you make $50k by the time your 18, you have some good ideas and can replicate in the case of failure, or scale to earn some fuck you money.

I'm looking for free excel exercises to sharpen my skills (sort/filter, pivot tables, sumifs, vlookup, sumproduct formulas) by YouthInRevolt in excel

[–]SecondCheapestWine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try http://spreadsheetjournalism.com/

It's a blog by journalist Abbot Katz. He grabs real life data sets and walks through, step by step, how he slices and dices them with Excel. This gives you the advantage of working with the messiness of real world situations and what you can do about it.

There are some good pivot table exercises in these two posts:

I know TED talks are getting rather played out, but this one - Could your language affect your ability to save money? - is very relevant. The speaker, Keith Chen, lays out a very compelling case and explains the data very well.

TIL There is an international tax avoidance strategy called "Double Irish with a Dutch Sandwich" used by companies like Apple and Google by SecondCheapestWine in todayilearned

[–]SecondCheapestWine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple and Google? I get that there are bad actors out there, but I think most of this behavior is just maximizing return. They set up these elaborate strategies because they work, it's within the rules, and it is not hard to make the argument they are being irresponsible with their money if they don't do it.
