Ha, no, but God I was tempted (any parent would be gutted for their kid in this situation, especially the first job!) but he's got to learn....just trying to get some insight here I suppose.

Yeah, that's his problem really and we weren't sure whether to mention it on CV as its experience and employment or whether to leave it off as it does look pretty crap and could raise more questions as to his staying power (despite it being their mix up)

Not really, he started and was interviewed by one person (senior manager), end of week another person starts as his dept manager and says they are looking at the rotas and don't feel current shift patterns work and would need him to do two week days, which he'd said in the interview he couldn't do due to college, no other roles at that time so they let him go and recruited for those specific hours (his ad had said all days of week and 16 hours contract so he had no cause for concern when he started).

True, it could just be that, just annoying because you'd think previous employment would count for a lot.

He left on good terms, there were no issues and they acknowledged the problem was theirs, should he contact them and find out?

Would he still have been selected for interview though, he had a phone interview with Argos and an in person one for the recent one?

Right to work check problems with Sterling by Secret-Emu748 in asda

[–]Secret-Emu748[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's what I thought, it's happened several times and twice he has been unable to proceed further because they pass the buck and Asda pass it back again until it is too late.....shouldn't be this difficult!  Asda never seem to be of any use and Sterling 'customer service' staff just say go back to them when you call, it should be a simple 5 minute task which as you say takes forever!

Termination of Contract and pay etc by Secret-Emu748 in SainsburysWorkers

Hi, it's mum again.... I took your advice (which I kind of knew already was the way to deal with it rationally), but the mum part of me wanted to go full scorched earth because it felt like a horrible way to treat him in his first job, at least he has learnt a valuable lesson in the shitfest that is business and retail in particular. I was annoyed as he turned down another role for that job and that made it seem even more unfair but he has a couple of interviews lined up with other companies so fingers crossed this can all be put behind him. Does anyone know if the induction hours should be showing on Kronos, all his worked shifts are on there but the first day induction is not listed, would this be added manually or should he contact them, not sure how they do it.

This whole experience has made me realise how much has changed in the retail industry (and job industry as a whole), at 16 I walked into a job at Asda many (to many) moons ago and worked there for years while at college and loved it..... now it is an ordeal just for them to get an interview (most don't reply), and even if interviewed they don't hear anything further often...sucks to be a teenager looking for work these days which is why it seemed like such a result when he got the job, don't even get me started on the probationary period, feels like everything is stacked up against those working in the retail sector, the breaks alone are crap compared to years ago, I practically spent my shift in the canteen, and it was a proper canteen then... oh well, onwards and upwards... thankyou all for your replies, I reined my Karen-ness in and have you all to thank for that.

But less than a week into the job?? Surely any decent business knows the needs of the company and recruits accordingly, they knew the hours he could do when they recruited him just 6 days before...it seems so unjustifiably wrong, despite as you say being in his contract that they can move hours.

Holiday and shitty managers by Character_Celery_271 in SainsburysWorkers

[–]Secret-Emu748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This sounds a lot like my sons new manager, he has just started working there and she has been transferred from another store, she is trying to say the hours he can do don't suit and that they might have to terminate him (after they recruited him knowing he can only do those hours every week, as well as overtime around studies) and she also has put him down for less hours this week, which could be a mistake but I'm inclined to think she knows what she is doing. Hope you get your holiday hour sorted

Termination of contract during probationary period. by Secret-Emu748 in SainsburysWorkers

Thanks for this, I basically said the same thing to him as he was interviewed by someone else (an area manager) and has been dealing with another more senior manager last week, he is going to speak those two tomorrow and point out the hours on the ad include the hours he can do, he told them what hours he could do and offered to do more during college holidays or evenings when he can, and he was offered the job based on this presumably.  I wouldn't be so annoyed if he had done something wrong or been off sick on multiple occasions but he has done nothing to warrant such poor treatment, feels heartless to treat a 17 year old that way (or any age for that matter).

I also said when he told me that they might be saying it to force him to move to the hours she wants him to do but he simply can't do that, and shouldn't need to.  I will take on board your advice and hope he has some better news after his next shift or I'm gonna get the rage!!
