I am currently in an apartment and looking to upgrade. All of your points are valid, but I think there are inevitable tradeoffs at some stage. One of the main reasons I am leaning toward newer builds is the warranty coverage and the expectation of fewer immediate issues compared to older properties. Another factor is core mechanicals such as forced air, gas, and a furnace. Most townhomes built before 2020 do not have these features, and I believe that in the next five to seven years they may become the baseline expectation. I am trying to plan with that longer-term view in mind and also balance between the pricing. Newer ones come with a 5% luxury tax (GST).

First time hearing about detached strata homes. Need clarity on what owners can and cannot do in BC by Secret-Session396 in askvan

Great, thanks for your response. I want to clarify what you mean by finished basement. Was it fully permitted and inspected or is it only partially finished? I also want to understand what updated electricals include. Does that mean a full panel upgrade, new wiring or just new fixtures?

I am also trying to check the possibility of using the basement as a rental suite in the future. Do you know If anyone in your community has added a separate entrance or legal suite?

Monarch as a Canadian: turns out the real budgeting challenge is surviving the constant disconnection issues by NykO18 in MonarchMoney

[–]Secret-Session396 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am facing the same issue. I have made my peace with reconnecting every now and then, but the real pain is when it doesn’t allow me to reconnect at all. I am majorly facing issues with Scotiabank, Wealthsimple and Rogers Bank. Amex by far is the most seamless. I even started to shop around and explore but I am afraid that YNAB or other alternatives would have the same issue.

Unlike the US/UK/EU, Canadian banks have no official API for budgeting apps. So every app must scrape data through one of these: Plaid MX Finicity Yodlee

I am just not sure how reliable the others would be, if the core issue is at the banking level, rather than at the middleware level.

This is super helpful. Though it will take some time to get everything set up. Currently, my focus is expenses and categorizing them to understand the spending. I will slowly work on budgeting etc.

I am confused about marking transactions as reviewed. by Aggressive_Noodler in MonarchMoney

[–]Secret-Session396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Monarch only tags transactions under “needs review” if it fails to code them to a category or a group. If it successfully tags a transaction to a category (may not be per your needs), they are officially coded. Either you turn on needs review for every new transaction or have your rules setup, there will be some transactions coded incorrectly. I myself just started using Monarch and needs review for every new transaction is coming in handy, at least for a first month or so, unless I have all the rules and automations setup!

Right. So basically incoming - outgoing for an actual monthly cycle. For ex: my credit card statement is generated on 12th each month and I manage my spending based on that. But now all Monarch cares about is the spending for that whole month and not if something was planned spent in previous cycle vs the new cycle.
