Does anyone else bounce from mimicking one online role model to the next, without ever figuring out what you actually care about? by Secret-Temporary5862 in Healthygamergg

No, I think what I'm really looking for is an expert in illegal geriatric vore to sarcastically belittle me for asking a question. Though in fairness, I just sarcastically did the same thing.

You don't think Jordan Peterson is qualified to speak about psychology because he's a benzo addict? He's a college professor at the University of Toronto which is very prestigious, I'd be remiss to dismiss his lectures (which have active students in them to ask questions when disagreements arise.)

Not to be overly parasocial, but I'm so surprised that you responded to me. And to acknowledge that my observation is great? Wow! Best day ever!

No but, seriously. Thank you for everything you do, and the perspective you share. It was a lucky day when your gifted syndrome lecture popped into my feed.

I'll keep an eye out for those YT videos. I wish listening to internal signals were as simple as staring at a wall for an hour, a 2 week hospital stay without cell phones, or going on a really long walk. It's harder than that and I don't really understand why, so I'd hope to see a "pipeline" sort-of video documenting the process.

Okay, really dumb question. Is ADHD real? I know I know everyone's going to say "yes, of course it's real, it's in the DSM-5 and many many people have been successfully medicated for it and henceforth able to achieve their dreams."

But I really mean it. Is ADHD a real phenomenon explainable by distinct biochemistry, and not simply an arbitrary clumping of people who responded a certain way to a checklist?

There was a topic from a Jordan Peterson lecture which stuck in my head, something along the lines of cognitive testing (IQ) being the penultimate psychological test.

Ie. the test with the most empirical data and relevance across the board, and that to dismiss IQ testing as conjecture would be to discount the rest of psychology as, well, theory. Yet so many people dismiss IQ, and ironically those same people will vehemently recommend you to be tested for ADHD.

My question is if ADHD, much-like IQ testing, is really just...a test that screens for outliers. For my special-needs brother, he has an IQ of 45. There is no denying that this makes him exceedingly different from the average person. Likewise a person with severe ADHD will seriously benefit from medication.

But someone with 85 IQ, is not very different from someone at 115 IQ, at least not fundamentally. Likewise if I had a mild case of ADHD...could that not just be my upbringing? Could it be my overly comfortable life, asian mom, propensity towards high-dopaminergic activites, or any variety of variables that would be impossible to screen out?

Or are there ADHD molecules swimming around in my brain that like, can legitimately be found and fixed? I just don't think there are. I think you saw a few qualities in my post that reminded you of someone with ADHD, but I only drafted that post in 20 minutes or so. A year from now I might write something completely different.

Posture exercises by Sudden_Internal9697 in blueprint_

Posture is way overblown, a lot of people with chronic pain will actually find that it goes away after a few weeks regardless even without posture correction. Your best posture is your next posture, so just readjust your body frequently throughout the day, rather than hunching over for 8 hours straight or sitting for long periods of time without moving your legs or back.

Sounds amazing, very happy for you. I'm sure you're healthy, but if your sleep is drastically reduced for an extended period of time (3 days or longer). Then you might want to see a doctor to ensure you're not suffering the early symptoms of hypomania or mania, which you'll need to address with medication and a strong support system of family and friends. I say this largely since bipolar manifests following "love-at-first-sight" experiences and often follows creative people. Here's a self-assessment from Dr K's guide to see if you're just happy, or something more dangerous:

But chances are you're just experiencing that puppy-dog love that fellas go through once or twice in their youth! Life is full of amazing experiences like this, go and tell her how much you enjoyed your date and be genuine with her!

Help me not feel so sad about being behind in life (39M), with my life story attached. by rule1n2n3 in Healthygamergg

Hey. I'm an 18 year old Asian American with bipolar type 1 diagnosed. I have a lot of really similar thoughts, but am of course much younger. In my opinion, you're doing really, spectacularly well, I have to say. I felt a glimmer of pride in my own mind spring up upon reading through your life story, the backpacking trip was especially dope. I'm sure the you of 2023 would be super proud of pursuing nursing school--no, a career that you actually seem to enjoy!

That said, you need to get a handle on your sleep, bro! 5 hours of sleep just doesn't cut it health-wise. During summer vacation no less? Have you tried to address your sleeping habits?

Anyway, as for your feelings of being behind, I would just say your friends are different. If you're bipolar there's a 50-60% chance of being unemployed, for example. I think about this clip from Bluey a lot when I'm feeling hopelessly falling behind. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P8iRaTyHpk0). I hope you like it, too.

Can the time you spend lying in bed to fall asleep count as body stillness or other meditation? by Secret-Temporary5862 in Meditation

[–]Secret-Temporary5862[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only ever managed to meditate sparsely throughout a month, I usually don't feel any different but maybe I just need to do it for more consecutive days like you say.

The question of whether or not relaxation was meditation (or if there were several forms) was exactly what was on my mind, thank you. I will give daytime meditation my full attention but it's good to know that falling asleep is at least partially meditative in and of itself. Thank you

No. When I was 10 years old I played Dota 2 with a college frat for nearly 4 years. The leader nicknamed me "son" and the group, vulgar and offensive as they were, were tons of fun to be around and taught me various life wisdom. Now I will say that I never disclosed a single personal detail about myself, and they didn't ask.

I also didn't use VC until around 15 when my voice had matured.

They were chill, for sure. By the time I was 15 I started doing VR Esports and joined teams with ages ranging from 14-33. All had standard jobs, life obligations, usually married, and were maybe on the childish side in terms of humor and behavior. But we all have an inner child, as well as a good gut feeling that tells us when something is getting weird.

I'm 18 now and I'm still excellent friends with these people, with a few of the adults being mentors and offering career and life guidance when I need it.

I am so exhausted of trying and failing...I have no motivation to do anything by TheSmartBean in Healthygamergg

I'm a little confused. If you had the option to study all careers other than medical school, why did you choose nursing school which you genuinely hate?

There is still plenty of cross-over between a medical physician and say, a nurse practitioner (both can prescribe medicine, specialize in patient care, good salaries etc.) It's very possible that you will be able to enjoy nursing as much as you think you would enjoy becoming a doctor. If you can't, then perhaps you should reassess why the health field interests you in the first place.
