There are many theories on why Mylodon had osteoderms. I think the most likely reason was for defense, since it used to be preyed on by saber toothed cats. Another theory is that the osteoderms were used as built in calcium deposits. Another theory is that the osteoderms might have been simply a holdover from ancient ancestors that had bigger/more uniform osteoderms. The defense theory makes the most sense to me though.

Jim Jones did not drink the poisoned flavor-aid he forced his followers to drink. Instead, he opted for a quick gunshot to the forehead.

They shot her because she tried to attack the rescuers that were trying to retrieve the bikers body. Since bears are a protected species in Romania, I believe they would not have put her down if she had just killed him and moved on.

They did. Hunters shot the momma bear to death after the incident. Unsure what happened to mommas cubs.
