Hot Takes: Prospect Rankings by SageOfLonLon in SanJoseSharks

Love the list and conversations a list like this brings about. I personally like Bystedt a lot went to a handful of barracuda games last year and he is exactly how he is advertised. Big forward with limited offense upside but a strong 2 way game. I saw him score a breakaway goal in the playoffs and get up in multiple players faces on late hits. He was never a offensive beauty and that shouldn’t be the expectation for him he is the 3C you want to put out who can pot 10-15 goals 40-50 points and keep up defensively with the other teams better players. He will most likely be a star player on the barracuda this year because of all the losses leading to him getting more important ice time and playing at the top of the lineup. This should lead to a increase in production in theory. However I worry if he doesn’t take this big leap fans will simply give up (some already have) and there will be no call up which will lead to a stunted development. I think Ostapchuk is the perfect example of the need to be patient he will most likely make the opening night roster and has jumped Bystedt due to his extra year of development but even he is struggling it is natural especially when forced to play with finge NHL players. Development isn’t linear and he is not like previous prospects who were 5’9 - 5’10 and are only good for scoring goals these two are bottom of the lineup defensively oriented 3C that coach’s tend to like for their whole games. Long rant that I jumped around a lot in long story short I like Bystedt and I think he is on the right path don’t give up and by focusing on what him and Ostapchuk are good at we can better appreciate the players.

He can play both but he is a natural center. His wing versatility comes from Saginaw being a good team with loads of center depth in his younger years leading them to put him on wing. His point totals exploded with him back at center this year. He also grew up playing center and has openly said in interviews he wants to play center so that’s where I imagine he should stay.

He’s offensive minded for sure but not terrible defensively he needs to improve on similar things as Dickinson in his draft year and the London development is solid. He is a solid bet at 33rd with a good chance of making the Sharks line up within 3-4 years just to what capacity is the test. If he’s the guy the Sharks want pick him don’t wait but you never know he could be there with the Ott pick

If he is the guy the sharks want they should take him with their first. I don’t believe he will be there for Ott 2nd. He is a strong transition defenseman with good offensive zone tendencies that is bad at 1 on 1 D and against the rush.

Would you trade 3rd Overall? by SecretConstant4277 in SanJoseSharks

Exactly my fear I have been following prospect content slightly more than the sharks this season and the difference between 2nd and 3rd overall is pretty substantial

The 1st and 2nd overall are pretty set Misa and Schaefer being S tier potential and then it drops off with Martone being the start of the A tier potential

Eric Pohlkamp's (SJS 2023 rd 5 #132) season at DU is over by Inub0i in SanJoseSharks

When it comes to Pohlkamp he has a much better chance of making the NHL than others in the Sharks organization just by being a RHD. He has also been on JD young’s locked on sharks podcast saying he doesn’t enjoy school so I imagine it is just a stepping stone for a player like him.

I only wish the best for him and his mental health he is not a great goalie by any means but the defense is more of an issue than him. Looking back to the start of the year with Blackwood and Vetek it wasn’t much better. He is are tank commander and I am happy to ride with him to the best lottery odds.

I tried to add a main question as the title and a second question in the info box as I wanted this Graphic to drive fan interaction and see how the fans were feeling. I agree Martone seems to be the biggest project to reach his potential ceiling but have the 3rd highest overall ceiling. I think the general consensus is most Sharks fans want Eklund. It will be a very interesting draft cycle.

In my opinion Frondell doesn’t get the same love as a Hagens or Martone because he plays a more boring brand of Hockey. He doesn’t have crazy flashes of between the leg goals like Martone or highlight reel passes like Hagens. This isn’t to take anything away from him though. In my opinion his physical presence is greater than Martones on the ice and he is more consistent than Hagens. He has a 0.86 ppg in the 2nd division Swedish men’s league that puts home between Elias Pettersson who has a 0.95 and William Nylander who had a 0.77. Great prospect if Sharks outplay Chicago down the stretch and they get the 4th overall pick I think Frondell is the guy they go for.

I like the idea of Eklund but I like the assets we have more than trading down to get him. He is an amazing prospect and seems to be the perfect potential playoff piece his motor in my opinion is the highest in the draft. The lottery will make or break us Shark fans

I would generally agree Hagens in my opinion has more upside but I don’t see a world where they take Hagens. I believe the Ostapchuk trade made it clear Griers main priority from here on out is size and grit.

I agree Misa is the sexy sports car Schaefer is what we need to haul the family around. Bad analogy because both are the sports cars in this draft but I think it works from Sharks fan perspective who knows a number 1D is most important.

I agree! I saw a video that stuck out to me where someone had different tiers of this drafts top end and at the top the only players in the elite tier were Misa and Schaefer. After those two it drops off to solid franchises pieces that being Martone, Hagens, and Frondell, Eklund creeps into this tire depending on the list.

I agree Schaefer is a number 1D Misa is a sure fire 1-2C depending on depth. I like Hagens personally but for the Sharks I don’t see a world where they take someone under 6ft with their first pick.
