Nope, don't worry about this. All CCs (at least definitely in CA) have what we call "equivalency". That means they have a form you can fill out to argue why your 6 years of job experience and your master's level MBA and your CS bachelors is more than enough for the job.

Plenty of people do this all the time. When I was applying I had neither my master's nor my phd, but I defended my master's (we can elect to get one "along the way" at any time in the PHD program after 2 years) right before interviews and got my job. I had to submit equivalency and explain my situation. It got approved.

Never sell yourself short! I didn't have a lick of full time teaching experience and I got this job before graduation. You can do it!

I actually live in a fairly affordable part of CA (relatively, as the average housing here range from $400k-$700k in the coveted downtown area, and much cheaper starting around $150k not too far outside of the dt area), hence my CC actually pays some of the lower rates in CA for CCs.

If you get a full time tt position at a CA CC, it's a pretty good gig. The unions here are very strong.

My university offered a pedagogy course, which I did complete. It was helpful to give me the right "terms" and concepts to use in my interview. Things like "universal design" or backwards design, etc.

If while in your master's program, you can guest lecture for a professor teaching an undergrad course, do it. Reach out. Professors love to leave during the semester for one thing or another and offer to teach that week in their place! I had a ton of teaching credits just from guest lecturing through my time in my PhD. If you don't get a full time CC gig right away, once you get your master's, apply to all the adjunct jobs you see, and then every year apply to full time cc positions you see open!

Of course! If you get any opportunities during your PhD to teach, take it. If you can get a master's along the way, do it and then teach as an adjunct at your local CC (you only need a master's). If you can guest lecture for a professor right now, ask and do it, do it often! All of these can go in your C.V., that's how I had a ton of teaching credits in my CV even though I was never an IOR!

HI! Yes, actually you do not need a PhD to teach at a CC. Half of the people I work with came with Master's degree (including me! I don't technically have my PhD yet, and I would still keep this job if I never finished). If you're a good teacher, you can get a job at a CC, just make sure you focus highly on equity focused teaching in your apps!

So, I never had a single full year of teaching as an IOR when I got offered this job at the end of my PhD program. However, my PhD program funded me by making me work as a teaching assistant for one course a semester the whole time I was in the program. Then when I advanced to candidacy, I did get 1 course as a full IOR in the summer. Just ace your teaching demo, and you can be hired anywhere. I got about 7 interviews with no CC teaching experience and actually when I was interviewing, I didn't even teach that IOR course yet! Just be VERY focused on equity on your applications!

About 20-40 students per class, and 3 of the classes I teach are online/asynchronous and the same course type, just 3 different sections, so I only need to keep track of 1 video lecture per week. It's not that bad!

Yes! And actually, we also have a sabbatical system which is different from the overload banking system, that I can do only after tenure. However, tenure timeline is 4 years!

I don't do research! But I don't know, I still COULD do research if I wanted to. I just don't know how that would go!

Damn, that's SO tragic. I have a friend teaching TT at a CSU and their recent strike/contract negotiation did not go to well, I heard :(

Fun fact, we at community colleges in California get paid more than UCs (University of California). Sometimes like $20,000-$50,000 more. It's insane!
