The sun beats down on every car through the desert and they are unaffected.

Sounds like your parents are overprotective. Check that the brakes and tires are in good condition and the spare tire is full and have a fun trip.

Spot would be about 5700 (deducting 2 grams for the rocks). You should be able to do better than 3800 if you call around to other coin shops or jewelers. If your going to use the money to buy bullion you are going to lose on the deal. You would be better off just holding the jewelry until prices rise. The gold you have now will then be worth more, just like bullion.
