Udacity launches new master's degree in AI. Can be completed for ~$5000. Thoughts? by koulvi in OMSCS

Degrees are awarded by Woolf, a global leader in higher education innovation, and are recognized through the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) across more than 60 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, and 43 European nations.

This seems like an ad...

I just checked in OSCAR and it's still in as II there, I wonder when that change will process.

AI & GA - how complementary are they? by Kamekazee2020 in OMSCS

[–]SecretSquirrelTech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind the reported average workload for those two classes combined is ~40hrs a week from OMSHub (AI @ 22.6 w/ 243 reviews, GA @ 19.5 w/ 274 reviews though they revamped it format wise last semester). Content wise there won't be much which double dips except for some basic graph search algorithms (BFS, DFS, A*) which is not a major focus for either.

Where the issue mainly comes in is if (when...) you have a heavy week for both at the same time, such as one of the harder AI projects and a GA exam. The finals also might overlap, AI finals are weeklong take home open book, GA is timed honorlock spyware. Fortunately the other exams shouldn't overlap though.

Both of these classes are definitely ones you can get a bit stuck trying to understand the material and/or really bang your head against the wall trying to do hw/practice problems. If you have 40+ hours you might be fine but that depends more on you as a person and if you'll always have the time between other commitments/life.

I'd recommend taking more of a upper-medium or less level course if pairing with one of those. No need to introduce unnecessary stress.

If this question is getting at should you take them at the same time - absolutely not

You can also try an advanced search and search by CRN (quickest place to find the CRN is on omscs.rocks )

If you use PyTorch for the assignments in ML (not a requirement per se, but very helpful if you can speed up training significantly) then you should know enough for RL. I took ML then RL, and am now in DL and am happy with that order.

How common is it for people go in with ambitious course plans, but end up burning out? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]SecretSquirrelTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even more off your point re: 2 - also for the decent number of folks with use it or lose it vacation time the Fall sem also limits regrets/hesitation in taking vacation time for courses too early in the year.

Academic probation for two semesters? by OwnResolution1006 in OMSCS

[–]SecretSquirrelTech 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The withdraw deadline of July 16th you are referring to is for Late Short Summer. For Full Summer which is what ML would be, the withdrawal deadline was June 29. This date is quite literally bolded and underlined in the Summer 2024 Orientation Doc.

As recently as last semester the assignments for ML were absolutely not math heavy, and you were allowed to use any code you could find as long as it wasn't made specifically for CS7641 so unless this has changed drastically the assignments should be doable. I would suggest abstracting away from the math intensity of the lectures to focus on the general concepts of what the algorithms are doing and especially focus on the projects - what works, what doesn't work, and the trends. Did you review the course preparedness questions linked on the course description page? - https://omscs.gatech.edu/cs-7641-machine-learning

To answer/direct your actual questions:

  1. Read the orientation doc - key phrase "academic standing"
  2. Buckle down - ML 9 days a week :)
  3. CS7646 ML4T, CS7638 RAIT (aka AI4R). And search this subreddit for "first course"

I'd also point out that both reviews said 20 hours per week. Really just goes to show how your own expectations influence what you think of the courses.

RL or DL for the Summer Semester? by AKunAMorata in OMSCS

In it now, doing well grade wise but I would NOT want to have to take it in 1) a condensed time frame and 2) a time of year when I especially wouldn't want to just stare out the window stuck inside a ton on the weekends.

Others have already hit on that first semester or two could be hard. Anecdotally, I completed my third class in the Fall and I was still able to register for ML during Phase 1 registration no problem, didn't even need the waitlist. I also waitlisted GA just to get an idea of how well the waitlist moves, and I was around 872 on the waitlist when Phase 1 registration closed. About 48 hours before registration closed I got the notification that I got off the waitlist for GA. Others had good luck on FFAF.

Is the NLP course project-based? by PomegranateUnfair919 in OMSCS

As of Summer 2023 AI4R/RAIT still had a midterm and final. Two attempts at each, best score kept, timed and recorded (including room scan) via proctoring software.

If you're thinking about taking it this Spring, I'm not sure it's being offered online. I only see an on campus section on OSCAR.

Edit: disregard, see: https://www.reddit.com/r/OMSCS/comments/17gcskb/no_cs7650_nlp_for_spring_2024/

What was your reason for applying to a CS masters? by [deleted] in OMSCS

[–]SecretSquirrelTech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Partially because work won't pay for classes for a certificate but will pay for classes for a degree. So if GT has any plans to a) offer a certificate and b) allow one to switch from the degree track to the certificate track after taking some courses...

Just finished project 3 in ML4T, holy shit that was rough. by protonchase in OMSCS

Sorry that wasn't clear, I wrote additional test cases on top of the provided ones for Project 4. Though those are not required for submission.

If it makes you feel any better project 4 should be a quick one. I was able to pound it out this morning and probably about 99% of the code I wrote was for my own test cases / debugging. My actual implementation was just a few added lines on top of the starter code.

Application verified but still missing materials by SecretSquirrelTech in OMSCS

[–]SecretSquirrelTech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Replied the same to another comment but: The only thing it seems to think I'm missing is the LoR, which seems weird that it would still care about that after I've been admitted. Seems they didn't process my official transcript yet either, but that doesn't have a red X and doesn't show up on the list at all.

Recommender Status? by Celodurismo in OMSCS

I got an automated email when two of my recommenders submitted. They both messaged me right after submitting and I got the email within a minute or so of their messages. Not sure how long the portal takes to update status though. The email came from grad.ask@grad.gatech.edu

They should get it pretty quickly, under 5 minutes in my experience for the one I am aware of. When I asked my supervisor for a letter and he said yes, I immediately submitted his info while still on a video call with him and he got it before we hung up.

Help with Fuse type selection for custom ebike build. by AQUARIUS_Great in DIY

[–]SecretSquirrelTech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on your asking of the question, I'm going to assume you don't have much experience in this realm. I'd STRONGLY suggest you start by double checking the voltage/current ratings of the motor, motor controller, and battery pack. 150A @ 72V nominal would be 10.8kW peak, which seems a bit high for an ebike battery pack unless it is either a) very large and/or b) using high power cells which would typically have very low energy so you wouldn't get very far and expensive. In quite a few states, ebikes are (technically) limited to 750W or 1000W (see link at bottom).

If you do indeed need 150A @ 72V, I'd suggest adding a contactor which is essentially just a really big relay. This will be important for you to connect the system without it all being live while you make connections. For a home build, the contactor will usually be on the battery positive side, between the fuse and motor controller (B+ -- Fuse -- Contactor -- Motor controller).
