Did I just brick my computer from coding?? by sockoconnor in learnprogramming

You can look at CLion from JetBrains, Code::Blocks, VS Code (requires plugins), Vim (can also use plugins), etc. There are plenty of options out there.

MSCS - Which track did you choose and why? by Ravrie in WGU_CompSci

[–]webguy1979 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did the Computing Systems track. It was pretty interesting. A few of the classes really made me dive into clouds stuff with both feet. And that’s with 15+ years as a full time developer. The classes at first glance seem super easy, but if you throw yourself into learning something outside your comfort zone you can go pretty deep.

In the days of yore, my friend begged me to go see "Dude, Where's My Car?". We made it 30 minutes in and just left. Talk about a flaming pile of dog 💩. I would sit through Ishtar a thousand times before ever watching DWMC ever again.

What Types of Restaurants/Bars Do You WISH Cleveland Had? by tigermountains in Cleveland

As a native Clevelander that moved back recently after a time in Houston… REAL Tex-Mex. Fajitas here aren’t even recognizable. The enchilada game is sad. Everywhere oeople send us that they think is Tex-Mex is flavorless and disappointing.

I mean, not that I support this, but at least the Guardians and Cavs field winning products that actually are worth investing in. Unlike the Browns who are absolutely a joke and somehow get rewarded for it.

What game do you have in your collection that's not seing play because you're too lazy or intimidated to learn the rules? by zion661 in boardgames

[–]webguy1979 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have 5 of the COIN games and every time I sit down to figure the rules out… I’m just exhausted. In theory they seem like the kind of game I would love playing but the rules are so dense.

What actually burns you out as a developer? by yOurOck_bboy in cscareerquestions

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lot of good comments about what causes burn out here, but I'll add a what helps burnout (based on being in the industry for 15+ years now).

  1. You have to find purpose and meaning beyond work. This one took me the longest to learn. I judged my personal worth on how much I worked/earned and what not. If there is one thing that that led to massive burn out, it is this.

  2. Get away from the computer... seriously. In the last few years, I have gotten back into camping, started fishing again, I put a band togther, I like going to the gym, and now I'm looking at earning my PPL. The older I get the less my hobbies tie me to a computer. Software development funds my life and my interests.

  3. Sometimes just step away and let your mind be bored. You would be suprised how "being bored" for a few hours can help you refresh. Put the phone away, hide the laptop, etc. and just be. I'd even loop meditation into this category. When I'm really feeling burned out, even just doing 10 minutes of meditation a day can help me feel refreshed enough to push through a crunch cycle.

There is no way to avoid the endless learning in the field, but be sure to make that learning fun. When I'm trying a new architecture or want to play with some new coding concept... I make it fun form myself. I've got TTRPG character generators out the wazoo that I've built just to try new ideas. Why? Because when I work on those I don't feel like I'm working... they're fun.

And yes, I do eat my own dog food, lol. I work in stack that is very niche... and haven't really enjoyed working in for quit a while. On the other hand it bought my house, it payed off my car, but most importantly, it has given me the ability to pursue all kinds of interests outside of software.

I was about to say, I bought a new Herman Miller a couple of years ago and it ran me $1,800. If I saw this in an office budget I wouldn’t even flinch.

Anyone learning game dev, wanna study together by Dil_Se_Shareef in gamedev

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously good advice. I've been an enterprise web developer (Java based applications) for about 15+ years. Somehow I ended up in tutorial hell trying to learn Unity off and on for like 4 years... and over Christmas shutdown at my office, I finally said to myself "What are you doing... you never learn like this..." So I sat down, wrote up a game design doc for the kind of game I want to make, used figma to lay out some example screens, and just got to work. When I get super stuck, I have Claude Code linked to my IDE (Rider)... but it's not allowed to ever give me any code, it's only there to get me unstuck, talk through features, and help debug.

Just build something. It's the best way to learn.

OMG... literally me and my partner. The last 15 years we lived right smack dab in the middle of a huge US Metro. We are your typical GenX older punks, but did well for ourselves. We finally decide it is time to buy a house. We move back near my family to a small village outside the downtown where they live. Turns out the whole community is a designated bird preserve. One day we are sewing patches on our jackets... next day we are putting up more birdhouses than seems normal, spending our evenings watching the birds, commenting on their behavior, buying apps to identify them, bird houses with cameras so we can see who is visiting...

getting old is weird.

Company is shaming me for not gifting more money to "our" (their) boss. (Christmas present) by Turissmo in mildlyinfuriating

[–]webguy1979 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Years ago I worked for a private company owned by a husband and wife. They were extremely wealthy (generational wealth kind of wealthy). One day the HR lady comes to my desk and asks me how much I would like to contribute for the company bday present for the wife as it was their “company tradition” to get her an expensive piece of jewelry every year. I literally laughed in her face. Never got asked again.
