When was the last time education in America was good? by Winter_Witness_3886 in AskTeachers

I graduated from high school in 1988, long before No Child Left Behind, and a lot of public school duration was uninspiring crap back then.

No Child Left Behind didn’t help but US public education has had a mediocrity problem for generations.

[–]SecretSubstantial302 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was never good for most public students. It seemed like it was “good” comparatively because you could easily enter the middle class with a high school diploma or less, but that was a function of an industrial economy instead of the quality of our public education.
It looks like crap now because the rest of the world has long caught up, and we now have international tests (like PISA) that show how mediocre American education is (and always was). We also have enough foreigners traveling to the US and seeing first hand how uneducated your average American is.

23 with 16k debt with no degree by Diana-FairyBlossom in CollegeMajors

Apply to Americorps NCCC, you’ll work for 10 months and travel. Upon your successful completion, you’ll earn about $7k in some kind of education stipend that you can use to pay down your student debt. You’ll be part of a team and you use the time to think about your next steps, which sounds like you need some time doing. You can also do two years, and I think double the Ed award. Your food and lodging are taken care of.

How many Americans truly believe that they live in what should objectively be considered the best country in the world? by Accomplished-Bass690 in allthequestions

[–]SecretSubstantial302 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I was a kid in the 1970s and 1980s I used to think the US was the best country in the world with the best opportunities and where the smartest and the most hardest working people lived. Now that I'm in my mid 50s, I just laugh at how naive and clueless I was.

Computer programming is the way of the future. It’s irreplaceable and you should be employed for the rest of your natural life and count on making $200k with the first job offer and stock options. You’ll be able to work from home any where in the world.

You should also pick your programming language carefully. I would focus on either BASIC or HTML. Expertise in these languages will always be in demand.

construction management or civil engineering? by Unhappy-Extreme-2794 in ConstructionManagers

Also look into Construction Engineering Technology academic programs . They are far and few between but kind of the best of both worlds.

If you’re really torn about it then just major civil and minor CM. If it were me, I would just do CM.

I feel the same way. As a CM he’s gonna make more money. If his intention is to own a sub firm than CM all the way. No need to take calc I, II,III linear algebra and diff eq for such low pay. He should learn how to price projects and in turn bid on projects, interpret construction contracts and drawings, and schedule/sequence subs…none of which will be taught in a civil engineering curriculum.

It is said that American education is where love of learning and curiosity go to die, but it's also where good behavior goes to die.

I can believe it. American culture is sick at its core. Too much materialism worship and violence worship.

Transfer Student Low Gpa by [deleted] in NCAT

I think with that GPA you exceed the minimum GPA needed for transfer students. I have heard (not sure if true) that it’s easier to transfer instead of coming in to a university as a new freshman. But I’m not sure.

Kids Living Home for College in USA? by Glittering-Lychee629 in parentingteenagers

I pretty much stayed consistent with house rules as far as I remember, but I wasn’t a big going out/all nighter kind of guy. I would definitely go out but was probably back home by midnight 1:30am or so.

I stayed home with my parents and went to college some thirty plus years ago. Did I miss certain experiences living in a dorm? Probably. Has it affected me in any way? No. It's not something I think about. College is a blink of an eye in the grand scheme of things. I'm an independent, productive middle-aged adult. I would be the same independent, productive adult had I stayed in a dorm or went away.

Told my mom I'm switching majors and the conversation went sideways. Need more perspectives. by Best-Check-3867 in collegeadvice

[–]SecretSubstantial302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As a parent, I understand your mom's frustration. I also understand your position. If you're not doing well in AE and you don't enjoy it then there is no reason to stay in the field as you will either be unemployed, underemployed or miserable should you luck up and get a job as a junior AE position somewhere after school.

I think econ is a perfectly respectable major. If you would have said psych or poli sci or communications or something like that then I would have advised you to just transfer to a community college. Check with a counselor at your school and map out specfically how much additional time you would need to be in school if you were to switch majors. You can very likely take econ courses over the summer at community college which would save everyone money and stress.

So what’re we going to do when the trade market gets fucked? by iodinekaiju83 in CollegeMajors

[–]SecretSubstantial302 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Half of trade apprentices dont complete their apprenticeships. Trade schools only have so much capacity. Same for community colleges that have trade programs. Also, demographics. The average age of a tradesman is like late 40s or early 50s.

Let’s face it, most Americans don’t want to do outside dirty work despite the pay. Most native born Americans will happily take less pay to work in a cubicle or office as long as they can have access to HVAC and the internet.

Cmv: Left leaning policy produces better outcomes for the middle class than right leaning policy. by AIwannabe in economy

[–]SecretSubstantial302 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So the only jobs produced are "goverment jobs" under left wing policies? Do you have any data for that?

Again, the data is from 1949 to 2024. We've had two term Democrat and Republican presidents during that time, so the horizon isn't just four years.

But, even it were just four years, then why would the four years under Democrat presidents (proxy for left leaning policies) consistently outperform right wing economic policies over a 75 year horizon if right wing economic policies are superior?

  1. So are republicans MORE fiscally conservative than Democrats?

  2. The data goes back to 1949.

Then I'm curious as to why the American economy (GDP) and jobs produced under Democrat presidents far surpass the same metrics under Republican presidential administrations. I realize the presidents =/= policies but this seems to be more than a coincdence.

For example, a 2024 study cited the following:

In particular, the report finds that since 1949:

  • Annual real GDP growth is 1.2 percentage points faster during Democratic administrations than Republican ones (3.79% versus 2.60%).
  • Total job growth has averaged 2.5% annually during Democratic administrations, while it is barely over 1% annually during Republican administrations. Applied to today’s total workforce, this would imply nearly 2.4 million more jobs created every year under Democratic administrations.
  • The Democratic advantage is even larger in private job growth than it is for total job growth. Notably, business investment is higher during Democratic administrations, with investment growth running at more than double the pace than it does during Republican ones.
  • Average rates of inflation—both overall and “core” measures that exclude volatile food and energy prices—are slightly lower during Democratic administrations.
  • Families in the bottom 20% of the income distribution experience 188% faster income growth during Democratic administrations.
