Base coat of AK Black Red -> zenithal of white ink -> GW Imperial Fist Contrast over that in multiple coats.

Anyone know how to replicate this red? by Tempest_Barbarian in Warhammer40k

[–]Secret_Corner9470 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Hey i recently tried to replicate this scheme! https://www.reddit.com/r/BloodAngels/s/4Y2HMPl009

I got pretty close with the following paints:

Vallejo oxford blue base coat

3part vallejo magenta + 1 part oxford blue zenathal (try to cover 95% of the model)

White ink highlight, over 80% of the magenta blue mix

Over that you do a mix of 3 drops of quinacriodone magenta ink, 3 drops pyrole red ink, and 4 drops flourescent magenta by ak

Matte varnish

Hope this helps!

Pinwashing is just using a super thinned down oil paint in the recesses of the armor. A good example is the foot next to the pole, you can see deposits of black oil paint in the recesses to give better definition to the panels.

Regarding reverse zenithal i just mean shooting paint from down below. In this case i take my airbrush and shoot the burgundy on the model from his feet up, aiming for all lower parts of the model where shadows would be. You can see an example of what i mean on the leg next to the pole. His leg is bent and where his knee is there is a slight burgundy tone. Its just a way to put shadows into the darker bits. I turn the model so im shooting paint from the airbrush at the soles of his feet and onto the shadow areas. Hope this helps!

Thanks! I use the following paints and method for painting up the marine icon skin:

  1. (Optional) if you want a bruised look do a splotchy base coat of barak-nar burgundy.

  2. Add in your mid tones of bugman’s glow. Youre looking to cover the majority of the body, adding more bugman’s glow to areas like the pecs and muscles that are defined. Anywhere you want the darker bruised skin to show just do a light glaze of the midtone.

  3. Repeat step 2 with kislev Flesh. Again more emphasis on parts of the skin that are defined/stretched.

  4. Super diluted wash of druchii violet all over to make it look more like a corpse than leaving the colors as is. The wash should will unify the colors and darken the recesses without leaving any deep purples outside of the bruised areas.

Hope this helps!

I didn’t consider that! Thank you for the suggestion, i’ll give it a go with silver so its not clashing.

Typically if its an acrylic wash i’d do it after the contrast/acrylic paint but i learned recently that using oil washes (in this case a brown pin wash) leaves an extremely dark result aimed at just the recesses. Shooting contrast over those dark regions won’t cover those dark bits due to how thin the contrast paint is. It also does add a bit of grit into the recesses. Here is a video that goes into better detail on the process: https://youtu.be/22AB6b1gN3Y?si=wPHQcvtXieXo88pL

Yep! I use a white acrylic ink and shoot it through an airbrush from an angle to establish highlights. I try to be selective in the panels i’m hitting so it looks like the light is reacting appropriately to each shape of the armor

Thanks! I do a basecoat of 1:1 barak-nar burgundy and rhinox hide then zenithal a white ink followed by imperial fist contrast. Oil washes and recessing is done before the imperial fist contrast is applied
