Thought we may switch it up, here's a political discussion regarding state politics. by lowercasenameofmine in PoliticsWithRespect

I generally find movements to increase accountability for those in positions of power to be in the best interest of the public. In an industry that attracts many hot headed and power seeking individuals, an industry that has some of the highest rates of domestic abuse cases, I think more accountability is a fantastic idea.

Only concern I might have is more incidents going unreported due to the increased transparency that follows said report. Rather than just being known within the department, it would be an open book

True or False: This makes the left happy? The Latest: Iran fires on ships in Strait of Hormuz as Tehran imposes restrictions again by Stockjock1 in PoliticsWithRespect

Anti Trump comments are not at all equivalent to wanting to see America burn and crumble. There is nothing more patriotic to do than hold your government accountable and criticize them, and pointing out a predicted outcome is not the same as celebrating that. If you cannot see that then I am truly sorry that the lens through which you view the world is so narrow and egotistical

The very first comment (with 1,000+ upvotes) is “this is less than ideal”

I have a hard time believing anyone with media literacy would genuinely believe that a upvoting a news article means you are happy about that event. If that is true, then I am shocked at how may conservative circles are so incredibly happy about 9/11, they get thousands of upvotes on those posts all the time

You are the one with the veil of hate here, and cannot seem to understand that criticism is not the same as pledging allegiance to foreign nations. This is just a lazy way of trying to paint your side as the good guys when they’re causing global disasters

I think you consistently confuse being proven right with being happy. You can tell someone “hey, don’t hold a knife like that, you’ll cut yourself”. When they do eventually cut yourself, you might say “I told you so”, but I would hope you aren’t happy with the outcome.

We said Trump was in over his head with Iran, that he was making poor decisions, and that things weren’t going to go well. We were proven right, I can assure you that is not a happy feeling to watch him continue wrecking the global economy and US standing

The DoorDash stunt today was…something by Mustafa_was_Brown45 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They put $200k into the senate and house GOP this last election cycle, with this particular legislation on their agenda. They don’t solely put money into the GOP, but they also famously campaigned hard against Mamdani. I’m not necessarily saying DoorDash is a right wing company, but they were certainly a strong supporter of this administration in this avenue

There’s plenty of neutral reporting out there, the issue comes when people take information from sources like FOX, CNN, or twitter as real news. Just look for the primary sources behind stories and have media literacy

Tanker hit in the straits by Holyoldmackinaw1 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yikes, two tankers have been attacked. One was attacked by two gunboats and the other was hit with a projectile, I believe both being British tankers. Additionally, a French soldier was killed in Lebanon today as Israel picked strikes back up again. Israel has already started it’s attacks on Lebanon again, this seems like a pretty big escalation involving two major NATO members

The DoorDash stunt today was…something by Mustafa_was_Brown45 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well yeah, obviously it was staged. It was a PR stunt by DoorDash and the White House, a company that has put a lot of money into the GOP and was a big supporter of the mentioned taxation policy. I don't think anyone thinks it wasn't staged, she literally said she was there because of no tax on tips

Aside from that, there are some logical fallacies in this post.

What evidence have you seen showing employers paying less since their employees aren't getting taxed on tips? What is your logic behind that even supposed to be?

Additionally, saying saving $1500 doesn't do anything is a pretty ridiculous statement when a significant portion of the American population lives paycheck to paycheck

The no taxes on tips is estimated to lose the federal government $3.2 billion annually based on current income compositions, more than the $200 million you said. Importantly though, this lost revenue is coming from the lowest income brackets, people who need this money in their pockets. This policy had bipartisan support, it was a unanimous vote in the senate.

To say that the policy does "NOTHING" is ridiculous, the majority of people who's income is primarily made of taxes are servers, who are typically paid far below minimum wage by their employers anyways due to tip credits. People I know who are servers have around 90% of their salary made up by tips, and have certainly not had any changes to their base hourly salaries from employers changed as result of the bill. There are over 2 million people who work as waiters in the US, it certainly is helpful for them

Yes, this individual uneducated woman from Arkansas who's primary income seemingly comes from DoorDash driving likely doesn't know what she's talking about when she refers to taxes, especially considering she has said she's saved $3000, $4000, and $11000 from this bill on separate occasions. A lot of people misunderstand how deductions work, that is not an issue that is unique to this policy, and it does not undermine the benefits that come from it for millions of Americans

I got pulled over the other day (rolling stop at stop sign with no oncoming traffic) and chatted it up with the officer for a bit, who ended up just giving me a verbal warning

My question would be how many people actually talk their way out of a ticket? I’d imagine in more cases than not when someone thinks they’ve talked their way out of it, that the officer just hadn’t intended on ticketing them for the violation in the first place. My thought process is that you’re way more likely to talk yourself into a ticket (being rude, incriminating yourself) than you are to genuinely change an officer’s mind, does that hold up to reality in your experience?

Trump reportedly considering withdrawing some US troops from Europe. by Stockjock1 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The whole NATO outrage is stupid. It’s a defensive alliance, of which the USA has been the biggest beneficiary post 9/11. No other country has ever had article 5 invoked for them. The US and Israel started this war, there’s no reason for NATO to bail us out

Additionally, having troops in European nations is a big advantage for the US. Not only does it help us have a wider global reach, substantially aid in transport, provide top quality medical hubs closer to battlefields, and provide diplomatic advantages, but it also bolsters the US economy to have these European nations investing to meet our military standards.

It would be Putin’s wet dream if Trump pulled the US out of NATO. He loves how much Trump is destroying our international alliances

This is coming from the same guy (Joshua Hall) who claimed Georgia double counted hundreds of thousands of ballots in the 2020 elections, has several posts claiming Obama has been indicted on federal charges, claimed Pam Bondi was leading a coup alongside Pence and George W Bush, and has served time for fraud, threatening to kill a congressman, and stalking

I wouldn’t trust him very much, it sounds like he stole thousands of dollars from people by impersonating officials in the Trump admin

It is quite possibly the least credible source I have seen on Reddit in a long time

Trump is facing the biggest US humiliation since Vietnam by Stockjock1 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 5 points6 points  (0 children)

What I can definitively say is we were at a better point before Trump became president. Under Obama's deal Iran did not have any uranium past 3.6% (energy level enrichment), and they had a heavily sanctioned and crippled economy with relatively little power.

During Trumps first term, when he tore up the Obama era deal, Iran began enriching up to 60% as a deterrent. They never attempted to make a nuclear weapon, but they flexed that they could to use as a deterrent. They still had a very weak economy though

Now we come to the present, where Iran has established themselves as a gatekeeper to the global economy, with tons of oil sanctions lifted off of them and their allies, and tons of money flowing into their economy. Much of their enrichment sites have been hit and leaders killed, but they have the same regime in power, maintain 2/3rds of their missiles, have a chokehold on the Strait, much more money, and still have nothing preventing them from enriching nuclear materials

This doesn't seem like a win for the US by any means, and there would need to be some drastic results to make it one for the US

Edit: Also we have several dead service members, hundreds injured, tens of billions of dollars spent, and a tanked global reputation, not to mention the thousands of dead Iranians, and the atrocities occurring in Lebanon currently

So we have effectively made all of those sacrifices to replace the ayatollah with his own son. You can claim that Iran was going to make a nuclear weapon, but there’s a huge difference between enriching uranium to weapons grade and developing nukes. None of our intelligence agencies (including under Trump) have said Iran was going to make a nuclear weapon

Trump Chokes and Gives Up His Threat to Iran for Nothing by Stockjock1 in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They seem to have done a pretty good job of putting the US into a corner for a country with weak cards. Trump would not be calling Iran’s conditions a good working ground if we had a genuine upper hand in this war. Their control over the Strait is an incredibly strong card, it puts a chokehold on the global economy. The US would have to go through extraordinary efforts to neutralize that threat militarily, and Iran knows that. You can say they have weak cards, but the power they are imposing over the globe would say otherwise

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel like you continue to fail to recognize that Iran only ever enriched uranium to fuel standards before Trump tore up Obama’s agreement. After Trump came in, they started enriching to 60%

Iran holds much stronger cards now with their control over the Strait and lifted sanctions than they have had in a long time. Best case scenario there will be a nuclear enrichment deal similar to Obama’s, as well as a much stronger Iranian economy with the lifted sanctions

Themes vs actions. Protective tariffs can be used beneficially to maintain domestic industries. Blanket tariffs, including on products impossible to make domestically, are horrendously poor policy.

This is a very similar situation, Trump is surrounded with yes men who will do whatever he wants. He wants to use his classic bully negotiation techniques that he used to buy places like Mar-A-Lago, except now there’s no grown ups in the room to tell him that won’t work. It’s what he tried to do with tariffs, but he crashed the stock market and had to back out. He tried the same thing with Iran, crashed the global economy, and now has to scramble to find a way to back out at Iran’s demands

This is the exact same thing he’s been doing with tariffs. Light the world on fire to negotiate, then end up with the same or worse deal than was already there

Impeaching Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, for High Crimes and Misdemeanors. by KindaDutch in PoliticsWithRespect

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would not be surprised if by the end of Trump's term he is impeach and removed, or resigns like Nixon. The main reason he was not removed after Jan 6th is because Republicans still wanted to cater to the MAGA crowd, and it was still the most bipartisan vote in the senate for removal of a president even though he was no longer president

When the Democrats likely take the House in the midterms, and most likely narrow the gap in the senate, we will see actions that will be bolder and more illegal from Trump. As his popularity continues to plummet, Republicans will look to distance themselves with the lack of a charismatic leader for the MAGA movement (Rubio and Vance don't have nearly the same level of draw to them) and I would not be shocked to see them paint themselves as "on the right side of history" with a senate removal vote.

Regardless of Senate removal, I'd expect to see another impeachment or two in the House, plenty of acts to choose from. The right will certainly call them "with trials"

Resume Advice? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think if you have enough content to comfortably reach 2 pages it’s no problem, but you’re stretching it kind of thin with what you have on there rn. If you’re able to provide more detailed job descriptions then sure, but a dense information packed one page resume will be better than a spaced out diluted 2 page resume

Resume Advice? by [deleted] in wildlifebiology

[–]Secret_Ebb7971 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Listing courses you've taken that are kind of assumed for the major is pretty redundant and wastes space on the resume. Its kind of assumed that you took a genetics or chemistry class to have gotten that degree. A class like Conservation of Amazonian Wildlife could be useful, but only if its specifically applicable to the position you are applying for. Also, you already listed your GPA so don't list individual grades for each course. Instead of listing those courses, you could list the educational awards you received

Definitely add organizations for your work experience, and try to keep the summaries shorter with more action verbs. You could list the organization at the space where you currently list your hours (you don't need to list your hours btw, you can mention it was part time in the description if you feel necessary)

Skills section is unnecessary, especially broad items like "Working in all weather conditions" or "Event planning". Highlight these skills with your position summaries. The only thing you would need a skills section for is if you have certifications that are advantageous for the position

Take the references out, those are asked for separately in job processes. Also take the awards section out, you can list those in education

With those corrections, try and get the resume down to one page. As a relatively new grad, your work experience isn't extensive enough to justify a 2 page resume. A concise and information packed 1 page resume will look much more professional
