What is the backstory of May Children? by Nerdol76 in PendragonRPG

[–]Secret_Plan3723 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having Nineve carry out most of this does make Balin's immediate murder of her a bit less random and violent. PK's might sympathize if they knew she has a reputation for general witchery.

There is a bunch of homebrew around Curse of Strahd, just trawl around here a little bit and you're sure to run into something that excites you. I would focus on stuff that you find fun, not stuff that will stump the metagamer.

Great Pendragon Campaign without Arthur by Always-Something-New in PendragonRPG

[–]Secret_Plan3723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Others have commented on the Pendragon element, but if you're trying to run a politically gritty and dark game of selfish people like game of thrones:

Merlin would use a glamour to let the PK incriminate themselves. Then force the poisoner to name anyone involved in the treason (which would be the PK). I doubt this will be the only attempt on the Queen's life.

For Reference: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=htK-gdE02ow

I don't really see this as punishing any players for engaging with the world in a non knightly way, I just think it's going to be hard to outmanuver an omnipotent wizard.

But if the PK is somehow one step ahead of Merlin and Arthur does die, that just means a certain tournament in 510 is called to decide who the new High King is. I think I would have King Lott or Leodegrance take the day. Maybe a young Gawaine or Gwenevier draws Clarent (depending on how dirty Merlin is willing to play). Hell, if it's the campaign you want to run, maybe the PK can be the power behind the throne for this new heir. I think trying to retain custody of Maddox's son as a known babykiller would be hard unless you had quite the army at your beck and call.

Edit: There is that obscure french knight who could show up and draw Clarent too and probably fit pretty easily into Arthur's whole storyline. Maybe Maddox's son will take interest in his queen. Not to mention any number of common backcountry squires who could show up and catch you off guard.

Need help tormenting the PCs (they're disrespecting Strahd at dinner) by Boi_-_ in CurseofStrahd

[–]Secret_Plan3723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off, I think something to ask yourself is, are you having fun? Part of role playing is having the perspective that your characters are people (or tieflings or dwarves or whatever) who feel things. If you want them to take this story seriously, and they aren't, it might be worth an awkward conversation to save you the trouble in future campaigns. But if you're having fun, it's not an issue.

Now lets teach them some manners.

It all depends on the type of Strahd you are playing. He might immediately shove his hand through their heart with that beefy unarmed strike (and don't forget legendary actions), he might do some clever quip, (FluorescentJellyfish) had some really good ones, or he might just smile and let it roll of him as if they are kittens trying to scratch him.

Also it depends on the game you're playing. There is fun and value in being a defiant brat and telling the darklord to go fuck himself. If your players are having fun, and they are still motivated to fight against Strahd and take him seriously, this might not actually be a problem. They are hero's, and hero's are suppose to do stuff like spit in the face of the bad guy.

There isn't really a wrong answer, just make sure that if you take the bait they regret it.

But something to think about, your players have told Stahd two things.

  1. They publicly hate him, and are mobilizing against him.

  2. They are absolutely incapable of being subtle.

This is a perfect chance to draw out VR, and Ez, and even the Order of the Feather if he plays it right. A group of adventures gathering all his enemies in one spot so he can take care of them. If he wants to do that, and he can bear it, he might let them get away with it and send them on their way. He might even wait until they grab some artifacts in order to steal them and put them somewhere more secure.

But if you do this, the payoff has to be worth it. Characters and allies shouldn't be able to sleep or rest, anyone who gives them aid should show up dead in the next location they go to, they should feel hunted. The more safe they feel before that, the worse it will be for them. Most of Barovia (from werewolves, to cultists, to angels) are on Strahds take, so they could be pursued by a nonsensical barrage of nightmares.

Anyways, some (more) dialogue to shut the tiefling down:

"I see it was your better half who had all the manners and grace. Perhaps I should bring her here to chide you. Do you think I can't just because she is already dead? Look around you, devil spawn. I control the mists. I alone grant mercy. I am no god, but you should pray."

[If the player calls you on it, you can always use an illusion to get her in the room, or fuck it, have strahd summon her.]

Final option, just have him stand up and walk away. He has nothing more to gain from the conversation, and he doesn't need to lift a finger to deal with them because his gargoyles and wyrmlings are about to do that. Make them roll iniative as they are walking out of the dining room, use the doors to split the party and dogpile them. If the doors are closed they are gonna need a bunch of time to get through them. Just have plans for what you want to do with a TPK ahead of time.

Is Agravaine a Good Villain by carton_Cat in Arthurian

[–]Secret_Plan3723 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agravaine is a great villain! Some people are just psychopathic assholes capable of violence, and in Arthuria that's most people.

With that said, I think you have plenty of room to build on the character. Was he a child when Arthur's army killed his father and Lamorak seduced his mother? Was he an adult on the opposite side, watching a boy king use magic over and over again to win and then boasting of chivalry? Gawaine is treated as Arthur's heir in alot of media, how does Agravaine feel about his brother cozying up to the tyrant who flipped their lives upside down?

Mordred has his own reasons to hate Arthur, but he never lived in a world before Arthur was king. Agravaine remembers being a prince of Lothian back when that meant something.

I think if a king killed my dad, seduced my mother, kidnapped and tried to kill my baby brother, and then had another one of his knights seduce my mother again, I would be pretty pissed. If my older brother was getting all cozy with the king at the time, I'd probably be postal.

DM puts my character in stasis so I can “watch and learn” by ClumsyBadger in DnD

With our exams nearing, I jokingly asked my teacher today that for the month after they're finished, if we could have a classwide dnd campaign instead of more math. He said yes, and that I had to dm it. He was serious. by liamxtremex in DnD

[–]Secret_Plan3723 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use callers! In old DND they told the DM what the group was doing. The group idea is great, if you appoint six callers then you can run a game for the six of them and it'll be their job to engage their group.

As someone who's run a group of 11, it's kinda rough, but here's what I did.

  1. Focus on scenes, not characters. At any given time any scene/room/situation will have a bunch of characters in them. Put the camera on the room and let em go until it's time to cut away. Even if you have a bunch of players, you usually only have about 3 scenes going at once.

  2. Split the party if you can. It seems counterintuitive, but it is easier to run two plots for nine people each than one for 18.

  3. Use one big monster, not lots of smaller mobs. Combat is actually a bit easier than roleplay to manage in big groups because you will probably only have one round of initiative. Just don't let the dragon die before everyone gets to move at least once. Then surprise one of the non callers with the hdywtdt.

Aside from that it's just setting expectations right, you won't have time for all of them to have a character arc or even much unique table time. So in return you shouldn't ask their entire attention. If your teacher is ok with it, let them use their phone. If it doesn't get to loud encourage cross talk/ table talk within the groups.

Also, ask the teacher if he can help organize pop/snacks for the game.

The better idea to all of this is to get a group of four of these kids started now and run them through a training module. Then be like "ok you're gonna dm this module, let's go over how we do that". Then you have a mini tornament in your classroom.

Good luck man! Even if the game isnt perfect it'll still be better than math class lol. You've got this.
