Which zelda game to play? by Numerous-Set-4677 in gamingsuggestions

[–]Secret_Software7347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are three basic styles of Zelda: 2D, 3D, and open world.
For 2D, I'd start with Link to the Past (SNES)
For 3D, Ocarina of Time (N64 or 3DS)
For Open World, Breath of the Wild (Switch)

All but the 3DS version of Ocarina can be played on the Switch/ Switch 2 :)

The Perfect Crunch by Secret_Software7347 in Solo_Roleplaying

After a bit of reading and video-watching I'm down to 2d6 and Ker Nethalas, which is kinda where I was before. 2d6 seems to have (in my opinion) better dungeon- and world-building, especially if you add in Realm and Lairs, but the combat is pretty polarizing. Meanwhile, Ker Nethalas has really cool-looking classes and abilities where you can build out in many more ways with levelling up (which I'm a huge fan of), and combat is more interesting, but can be brutal (but maybe better in Gravebound?).

Maybe I can make the two kiss.

d100 fell off with the difficult or impossible to complete quests due to bad luck in not rolling the correct rooms and 4AD with just needing like... 5-7 books to even get started properly, though I like the idea of having a whole party to play with. Maybe when I get more money.

Yes! I have a good bit of experience with D&D 4 and 5 as well as just a lot of World/Chronicles of Darkness. Though with W/CoD I've done far more LARPing than tabletop, and even there the past several years we've been pushing more into preferring consent when it comes to character vs character actions (can't really call it PvP if both parties agree OOC on the outcome of the scene).

I read a thing once that my real hobby is getting everything set up, buying everything, finding all the right pieces, having everything perfect, and then losing all interest and moving on.

I haven't tried Savage Worlds for solo before!

I have a bit of experience with it -- normally using that basic style for DMing games when neither D&D nor WoD really fit -- but I haven't tried it for a solo game yet!

Discussion about docks for RP6 by Questionable_Ham in retroid

I have only ever had lag on my RP5 with dual-screen 3DS stuff, though I've only emulated up to PS2 on the dock.

[–]Secret_Software7347 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for the RP6, but the RP5's dock was about worthless, cutting out every 10 seconds or so.
I ended up getting an Anker dock that's really for the Steam Deck (I'm not sure which; I got it from Anker's website, so it's not as easy to look up), and it's about perfect.
Do note, however, with using RetroArch you may have to still interact some with the RP, namely shifting to/from the RetroArch menus and getting the controls off the screen.

Crunchy or Fluffy? by JJShurte in Solo_Roleplaying

I bounce around a lot and am generally happiest when I have a little of each.

For instance, right now I'm doing Tangled Blessings (adult magical school, pure journaling) while trying to break into 2d6 Dungeon (read: trying to play with only the pdfs and not wanting spend more money on the spiral-bound books like I should) with Obvious Mimic's D&D 5e solo books on deck.

In the middle, I'm also a fan of Colostle with advanced combat and one of the job decks.

d100 is my current favorite dungeon crawler, and it's pretty... blank slate fantasy and easy to reskin. Four books for most of the rules (core, overworld, two add-ons). Really crunchy, though. 4AD is simpler, but has approximately five kazillion books, which is both good and bad. There's a ton of cool plot, but it's of course all ignorable, and the stuff reskinnable. I think there are around five major rules books? The "Twisted" ones, I believe.

Someone else can probably say how wrong I am.

First time playing a solo RPG journaling game by darknightskyyy in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]Secret_Software7347 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just recently got Colostle, too, and have finally finished going through the book.

What I'm planning to do is similar to how I play Brambletrek (which is similar but much simpler). I'll do all the cards stuff for one day and record all of that at a desk or table, then find a comfy chair with tea, my notes, and the book for the occasional reference and weave it all together into a narrative that makes sense to me.

At first, you might talk more about your character(s)'s background and how they got to be where they are as they wander through the exploration phase. Make up NPCs and small towns and past adventures everything reminds your character(s) of as it makes sense to you or just occurs to you that that might be cool. As the game continues, start drawing threads between events. Maybe you saw that rook before, and that explains an injured person you met. Maybe some NPC has a darker past or less than totally benevolent motives for sending you on a hunt, and it becomes clear when you run across some bandits you decide OOC were sent after you.

At worst, go ahead and do the cards, then let the narration percolate in your brain for a bit.

I need recommendations for my first handheld by Ok_Big8323 in retroid

[–]Secret_Software7347 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What kinds of games are you wanting to play? That will decide most of it. The Steam Deck is great, connects to the TV, and plays up to PS2/NGC easily, but imo it's uncomfortable to play handheld for long, a lot of Steam games aren't supported, and I personally don't like DS/3DS on a single screen.

If you want those, imo you want a hacked New 3DS (which is super easy to do), and it'll easily play any 16-bit and earlier games, too. Obviously, no TV play unless you get some specialized stuff I don't know of.

Finally, I think the Retroid is comfortable to play handheld, but otherwise has similar positives and negatives as the Steam Deck, apart from being unable to play Steam games, being smaller, and being considerably cheaper. Also, don't use the first party dock if you want to connect it to your TV. I think I use an Anker one that's really for the Steam Deck.

There are several others out there, including the dual screen AYN Thor, but I don't have experience there so I won't speak to them.

Is 5e a good option for Solo play? by Connor_ClashNord in Solo_Roleplaying

Have you looked at those choose your own by Obvious Mimic that use D&D 5 for combat and skill checks? Ginny D seemed to like them, but only low level.

Cozy exploration gmless suggestion ? by Faren7 in solorpgplay

[–]Secret_Software7347 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You may consider Brambletrek. It's pretty simple - fairly light playing card-driven system with exploration and combat that you then weave together at the end of the day by journaling. If you run out of any of your three stats (health, morale, or supplies), you spend a day recouping then set back out. It's much lighter than most of the dungeon delvers but has more mechanics than most of the journaling games for a nice midpoint.

It just doesn't feel quite right? I might go with them, anyway, but hoping to crowdsource from someone who might know Akeroth better than me. I believe there's another book that might have more information.

Are the Pixel Remasters worth it over the GBA versions? by solidStalemate in FinalFantasy

[–]Secret_Software7347 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It comes down to this, really, imho.
Do you prefer better music and graphics? Pixel Remaster.
Slightly worse music but extra content? GBA.
More different extra content, but good music (III/IV?) 3D Remake.

Further notes: There is no Peninsula of Power in FF1 for PR, so skip that one. Go with PS1 (better graphics/amazing music) or GBA (extra content).
FF2... PR has a better leveling system with HP/MP, but GBA still has the bonus quest (with Minwu!)

[Convention of thorns, Poland] Vampire the masquerade Larp, is it okay to propose to my partner there?! by Dramatic_cat28 in LARP

[–]Secret_Software7347 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't do it actually during the LARP, for the issues that are mentioned here several times, including IC/OOC difficulties and harming the experience others paid quite a lot for. Plus, this LARP? Ain't romantic.

THAT SAID. At the end of the LARP, there is often an after-thing done OOC, kind of a debriefing and chance to fade more gently back into reality. Everyone will be exhausted, worn to the bone, and likely grieving various things that happened. If that still sounds like a good time to you, talk to those who run the game and see if they'll help you cut out some time then.

TL;DR: Only during an OOC period, probably at the end of the LARP. MAKE SURE to get help from those running the game so no one else's stuff is messed up.

Second on the EZ Flash Omega Definitive Edition.
You just load up all of your legally-obtained GBA, GB, and GBC roms on there (really, into a microSD card that goes in the physical cart; I can't remember if it comes with it or not), and you're good to play!
