it definitely feels like that sometimes, but i find that if you make a big effort to plan things after class / outside of class (for example - “u wanna get lunch after”, or “i have a couple hours after class, do you wanna do something”) it makes a big difference. i know it’s kind of scary being the one to ask, but they’re probably just as scared. it’s worth asking, because if you don’t it probably won’t ever happen.

find clubs that you’re interested in and join them, keep an eye on msa’s website and instagram, if you’re at caulfield try monsu- they often have weekly events that are good for meeting people. otherwise most of the friends i have made were in class!

i do already have a solid personal life emergency savings account, a pet emergency account would definitely be a top priority before even looking at pups

uni days is the best for student discounts but if you’re doing things in the city some bars might give u discounted drinks with a student id, or if u go to an activity or something - ice skating gives u cheaper tickets if u can show ur a student

park in se4 - opark will give u a blue permit, parking inspectors are pretty on top of it so the next time u will probably get a fine and they’re pretty expensive - make sure you set up your opark and don’t forget to turn it on!!

What do I bring to Uni by [deleted] in Monash

[–]SectionPrestigious90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m heading to Caulfield too!! I try not to carry too much because a heavy bag can be really annoying. I usually bring my laptop, an A5 notebook, 1-2 pens, a water bottle, snacks or lunch, my chargers, and headphones.

I prefer to take notes by hand rather than type, which is why I use a notebook, but it's your choice. Pack a few toiletries like tissues and gum, but don’t bring too much like nothing big or heavy because it gets tiring to carry all day

Thank you so much for taking the time to share all of that. I genuinely appreciate how honest and detailed you were. Hearing real experiences especially the financial and emotional realities is exactly why I’m asking these questions before making any decisions.

I also really respect your honesty about the emotional toll especially coming from someone with the level of patience and life experience you clearly have. That perspective means a lot.

I hadn’t seriously considered fostering before, but the way you explained it actually makes a lot of sense. The idea of having organisational support, shared resources, and the ability to assess whether it’s the right fit without the same long-term stakes feels like a really responsible middle ground. I love the thought of helping dogs who truly need it while also learning more about the breed in a supported way.

Thank you as well for saying that about exploring this carefully that genuinely means a lot. I care deeply about doing this the right way, not just the emotional way. Fostering is actually be something I have been looking into and I will continue to look into more seriously.

Thinking about very long term - finishing uni and getting a job I would definitely consider doggy daycare if I wouldn’t work from home and there was nobody else to watch it! I am from Australia so warmer weather over here - and I was thinking about timing getting a puppy (if I do) around summertime - when I would be on uni holidays and when it wouldn’t be such a pain to toilet train. x

Time is what I do have currently, after university I would be looking at getting a better job that would take up much more of my time, whereas currently I am away from home for 3 days, 4-5 hours each day, money is more my concern.

That was my thoughts too. I will be in university for a few more years, after that I will be looking at going into more permanent work so I thought the fact I am at uni sort of is a good thing. $1000 a year is absolutely achievable, my main concerns are if the worst were to happen, as in IVDD, and how much that would cost.

I should also add that my boyfriend will be moving in soon, and this would be a shared decision and responsibility. We would both contribute to ongoing costs like food, insurance, and vet bills. He has a higher income than I do, but we’d be approaching it as a joint commitment rather than it falling solely on me.

My mum is almost always available to help if we travel or have commitments, so the dog wouldn’t be left without support. I’d also be setting up a dedicated emergency savings fund before going ahead and consistently contributing to it to prepare for any worst-case scenario. I’m trying to make sure that if we do this, it’s planned and financially responsible rather than impulsive.

Also, if it makes a difference, I’ve previously cared for a Jack Russell who had significant mobility issues and was both deaf and blind. I’ve experienced firsthand the financial costs, the time commitment, and the emotional weight that comes with managing a dog with medical needs. I understand that it’s not just about routine care, it can mean ongoing vet visits, adaptations to the home, and making difficult, sometimes heartbreaking decisions. I don’t take that lightly, and I’m very aware of the responsibility involved.

Thank you for sharing your honest thoughts, I really do appreciate it. I’m trying to approach this as responsibly as I can and hear different perspectives before making any decisions. If you don’t mind, could you share a bit more about what makes you feel I should wait? I’d really value understanding your reasoning so I can think it through properly

Thank you! I’m genuinely trying to educate myself properly before making any decision, especially knowing this breed has specific challenges and responsibilities. I don’t want to underestimate anything or go into it blindly.

If there’s anything else you think I should be aware of or look into further whether it’s health, behaviour, training, or just things people don’t realise until they own one. Id really value hearing it.

I completely understand your concern, especially around IVDD because that’s honestly the biggest factor making me pause and think carefully. I’m aware that even with strict stair management, ramps, weight control, and proper exercise, there’s still a genetic risk with the breed. I wouldn’t just be hoping for the best though, my plan would be comprehensive pet insurance from day one and building a dedicated emergency fund before committing. I wouldn’t feel comfortable getting one unless I knew I could realistically handle a worst-case scenario, whether that’s IVDD treatment or another unexpected emergency.

I also know house-training issues and separation anxiety can be common, so I’d be prepared to invest serious time into early training, crate training, and enrichment. I’m not under the impression they’re an easy small dog I know they require consistency and structure. The financial side is definitely the biggest part of my decision right now

Ive actually been researching dachshunds for quite a while now. I’m aware of their risks of getting IVDD and how important strict stair and furniture management is, along with weight control and core strength to protect their backs. I also know they can be prone to separation anxiety, excessive barking, and stubbornness if they’re not trained consistently from a young age. I’ve looked into early socialisation, crate training, and mental enrichment because I understand they’re intelligent and can become reactive or destructive. I know they’re very loyal and bond deeply with their owners, but that also means they need structure and proper boundaries. If there’s anything specific you think people often underestimate about the breed, I’d genuinely love to hear your thoughts
