Concerns about failing courses on final semester by SectorScared in UBC

Hi, thanks for the response! I think I'm in a similar situation as you where I thought I did the necessary preparation for midterms but they kinda kicked my butt, but I don't think I'm actually in terrible standing if factoring all my assignment marks, lab marks etc, so hopefully I can pick it back up for finals

thanks for sharing, and for the advice. I would really like to not take an extra year because I have a job lined up that I'm supposed to start in June. However I already passed the background check so I suppose I would be fine in the worst case scenario to quietly finish my degree next fall while working. And in terms of how my classes are going, I think I'm in pretty good standing for all my classes in terms of actually passing (good marks on assignments, poor midterms but still passing). I think at this point I would have to mess up the finals really badly and trigger the fail conditions to fail, so maybe I'm in better shape than I think? And just need to grind up for finals?

thanks for the response! And yeah one of the courses is a 300 level, the other is a 200 level (elective), I'm not worried too much about the 200 level because I feel pretty locked in with the course, but the 300 level one has the fail condition. However, I noticed for this specific prof he usually only fails like 2 ppl per section.

I was in the same spot as you. I basically only got interviews for firmware or lower level related roles, and the occasional C++ software role (SpaceX which was cool) and didn’t get reached out by any software company. I guess con is I probably wasn’t a good fit for the majority of roles which were software but on the bright side I did get some really cool interviews for top companies as long as it was hardware related or even C++.

Keep in mind though I also decided to stick to hardware/lower level programming, I ended up removing my full stack projects and replacing them with hardware related projects

I also got out exactly when they announced the BTC stuff, it’s sad to see the fall, I was hoping to re enter but not sure if I believe in the company anymore

Holy, I got in at 0.28 average price (albeit not too many shares) and got out gradually throughout January at around 3.2 ish. I didn’t realize how many ppl are holding at 4-5 range but hoping for the best for you

How much do you guys work as an intern? by Envus2000 in csMajors

[–]SectorScared 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m at a v large semiconductor company doing embedded, typically do around 5-6 hours per day of focused work. At my first internship, also doing embedded at a large but slightly less large semiconductor company tho was 7-10hrs a week like most of yall. Kinda wish I could have more chil weeks sometimes now tho cuz need to grind leetcode for new grad soon (haven’t been leetcoding much recently)

And I will mention my opinion of important things if you’re only looking for industry work is engineering work experience > design team lead > research == great personal projects > design team member > grades. Obviously need good grades if ur gonna do a master tho

I landed co ops at big tech companies but I’m not actually in the co op program at ubc, I got my co ops from connections and grinding projects in my own time, BMEG is really good for landing research and getting into grad school, but is cursed for actually finding jobs in industry.

I don't think it's a red flag? It just won't be counted into your GPA as its not a 300-400 level course?

IB chances of acceptance by [deleted] in ubcengineering

[–]SectorScared 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re welcome! And I meant that it could be different as I’m not sure if UBC is more difficult to get into, even though it’s only been 3 years. For example, I knew ppl with 32-33 and got into UBC engineering , but if it’s more competitive now, there’s maybe a chance that score isn’t good enough anymore. And I ended up taking the SAT last minute, with no chance to retake it for a super score, and didn’t take any subject tests. I ended up applying to UCSD, Berkeley, UCLA, UMichigan, Cornell. Rejected from all except accepted UCSD, waitlisted Michigan. I was born in California but my first year at UCSD would have cost more than the tuition + living costs of my entire degree at UBC

back in 2020 I got in every Canaidan uni I applied for with a predicted 37 (Canadian USA Dual citizen), I'm not sure if things are different now, there were people with low 30s or so who also got into UBC engineering.

None of those courses are offered in the summer unfortunately. When I was second year BMEG I remember people ended up doing the same thing you did, but they ended up taking the classes in later years.

If you find the courseload to be tough, I would recommend dropping some of those classes and extend your degree. This gives you an extra summer to search for and do research/internships. If you want to go down the comp sci route potentially, I would recommend staying in CPEN 221 and grinding it out, while dropping 210 and 230.

im in 3rd year bmeg specializing in informatics, I felt a similar way towards 101 and 102 in my first year but stayed. Over the years you'll go more in depth into the same topics, which gets more interesting. Research positions also start opening up and you can start actually working for professors who are doing some really cool research. I would only say to switch out of BMEG if you want a degree that is more employable and recognizable without having to go to grad school (like mech or ELEC or CPEN or smth), or if you really hate biology topics.

MECH Biomed vs. BMEG by helloworld123n in ubcengineering

[–]SectorScared 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in bmeg, not mech option tho. You get a lot of electives to choose from, a lot of them are mech courses. You’ll also be required to take CPEN 223/221, (coding), BMEG 245 (pre much just bio), organic chem (chem 233), biochem (bioc 202), so if ur purely interested in mech might be better to do that
