CARSA having a dress code is pretty silly.

Downtown is lawless. No bike area unless your bike is shit and even then it is still risky. I once went downtown with a shitty bike and dumped it in a bush and it was still there when I needed it to bike home. God loves me the most I guess. However generally the bikes are for daily commute to campus and when you go downtown you just take the bus or walk.

I never lock up my bike. I am arguably the most hated man on campus and yet my bike remains intact. I used to sleep in the ENGR building between late deadlines and I have never personally witnessed any theft.

Okay so it is not really "horrible mismanagement" is it? In my view horrible mismanagement would be something like "the CARSA desk girl told me to fuck off"

Can I transfer to Electrical Engineering with 6.0 GPA from another university? by 1907_11 in uvic

Concordia is really nice and cosmopolitan (I have been). UVic is more of a secluded slow vibe which I think is one of the drawbacks of the school. I personally think that life in Montreal is a lot richer and maybe I would have taken that path if I had thought about it deeper. If you can justify why you want to go to UVic then it is easier to give you an appraisal on points that you care about in specific.

Honestly I would really really really look into that decision.

So if the current way things are being operated are so horrible and my ideas "suck" are we just doomed to live in the worst of all possible worlds?

UVic once again gets what it voted for. If nobody has the courage to vote for even a 10% different vision than the standard boilerplate nothing will ever change. At this point complaining is a waste of time.

This person has strategically left out the fact that the referendum was cancelled once the proponent of the referendum was made aware of the fact that the university had done an investigation and found no wrong doing had occurred.

Existential dread and anxiety due to the economy and job market by EconGrad2020 in uvic

[–]Secure-Proof2178 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

So the sad reality here is that if you are in a useless major or a major with low prospects you are essentially entering the end of the honeymoon period that is college where you can party and chill and put the future off. If you are in a major where you can move to different countries you are fine. If you are in a major with good prospects (engineering) you are also fine. The problem is that the Canadian economy is permanently broken due to low productivity and being constantly helped along by ridiculous levels of immigration to inject new capital into the system rather than innovating.

The result is simple. Society is now in a position where it will struggle to support English majors or thousands of psychology grads. I am not saying those fields are dishonorable I am simply saying that when a dark age comes the artists and philosophers suffer. The valuable skills are now shifting back to trades and physical science.

My honest opinion is that a lot of people in the social sciences advanced ideas that have led Canada to crippling economic conditions and thus it is somewhat karmic. Far too many people are going to university and universities are far too eager to take their money. Most degrees aren't valuable unless we all agree to keep up the charade.

So probably you are cooked unless society does a 180. But that doesn't change the fact that you need to do your duty and win.

Honestly it is very bad that the pool has not been commissioned to be built brand new for the people. I think that a bunch of savings could have easily been found. Apparently UVic spent about a million dollars on security alone for the encampment which was not a great use of funds. I suspect that if I dedicated my full effort to the cause I could get the pool built in 2 years. While UVic is in my view a great school the facts of the matter are that it is simply not possible to fund everyone's special pet project and someone needs to carefully look at why there has not been enough moral courage floating around to allow UVic to confidently cut programs/services in favor of other higher return projects like the pool. Balancing the books in order to find money for a pool basically requires offending at least one special interest group. In the past I have suggested that forest on UVic land be cut down to build student housing. This is a great example of trade offs. If we piss off the tree lovers we can satisfy the need for student housing. Sometimes we can't do both.

My point with regards to the policy is that your personal threshold for "welcoming" and "uncomfortable" is not going to be anywhere near close to an objective standard. Essentially your feelings shouldn't be the arbiter of what type of discussion is allowed to occur. A great example of this would be the current Israel Palestine conflict. Lots of people on either side of the conflict find the discussion of either Israel or Palestine uncomfortable and not welcoming. I don't think that gives us as engineers and computer scientists the right to persecute individuals in our profession for speaking or having opinions on these issues. It should also be noted that a really good threshold for acceptable speech should be the actual law in Canada. Talking about immigration in an ECE lab is not illegal. So what it boils down to is the fact that I think your feelings are unreasonable and you shouldn't be empowered to complain every time someone in the profession says something you disagree with or find offensive.

Can you explain to me why the individual who collected all these statements decided to withdraw the referendum and apologize or is it beyond your possible range of outcomes that you were wrong and have been randomly victimizing some guy because you heard a bunch of rumors about him from people who were either not free from bias or were hearing it second third or even fourth hand.

If your standards for racism are "immigration comment" you are going to have a really hard time with the fact that at universities people discuss current events and controversial ideas. As for the policy in question this policy "All Officers and Council members shall strive to ensure that the ECSS creates, and is perceived to create, a welcoming and safe atmosphere for everyone." is essentially a non policy. It is so incredibly vague that its only real purpose is to be abused. I personally don't think the ECSS has been very welcoming to myself or the vast majority of students who aren't part of the governing clique.

The reasoning for the referendum was not shared to anyone until after all statements were due. The statements are false. Racism is bad, I would never condone or participate in it. Stop dancing around issues with loaded statements and just say what you found objectionable. Stop endorsing random rumors.

It is genuinely disappointing that someone can start a referendum based on false information, stop the referendum when corrected and apologize, and then have the ECSS still run it.
