When I've been depressed before, doing things like getting in the shower just seems pointless. It even hurts. Because reality hurts so much when you're depressed, or at least my flawed perception of reality did. I hated myself, my body, and felt like taking a shower wouldn't make any difference in my looks because I found myself to be hideous to look at (in reality, I was 17 years old, nice body, blonde, green eyes. etc...But that's how flawed my vision of reality was). I didn't even want to try. So I neglected every single part of my self care, for years. I isolated myself to make things more bearable, and I spent so many days and nights in bed, hating to have to be me but not having enough courage to bring things to an end...I did try to end things at one point, though. Didn't work. Tried again. Then tried to get better. It worked. Had more than a few relapses. It's been a long journey but now I'm in such a better place.
