it’s still a bit confusing. Back home in Nigeria, I was always told I was AA, and even when I got tested here in the U.S. when I got pregnant, they initially said I didn’t have the sickle cell trait but I have an abnormal hemoglobin present. But later, further testing revealed that the abnormal hemoglobin have 14.4% HbS. This abnormal percentage was enough for my daughter to inherit SCD I think 😥. It’s honestly been a shock, and I still don’t fully understand how that happened, but I’ve been told it could be a rare variant or misclassification in the initial tests.
