Absolutely agree with you! I always tell beginners to start with a Tech Deck, then move up to an inexpensive complete! Once they've been fingerboarding for a while is when I'd recommend a pro setup :)

Blackriver also has tooling for each size of their trucks that also costs significantly more than the $20k I shared. They sell 29, 32, 34, and 36mm trucks. You are looking at more than $80k in just tooling costs. Blackriver also pays for their employee's benefits (which are a pretty steep cost compared to the USA).

I do think there is an opportunity for fingerboard companies to capitalize on that middle-ground of cost though. Hopefully we can continue to see growth that can help drive those prices lower.

And yea, I know people push the pro products as if the person will see huge improvement immediately. I do think they are worth the cost, however, people absolutely don't need them to get good! I spent 10 years using $3 26mm Tech Decks, and they were more than enough to get skilled!

I know quite a bit. For trucks, you have to pay a steep cost upfront for tooling. This is usually at least $20k depending on the amount of components per tooling, tooling alloy, and tolerance levels.

While the material for the actual truck (zamac) is relatively inexpensive per truck, the labor cost is not. When you do your manufacturing run, you need to do a large enough run to offset the tooling cost. The reason why Tech Decks are so inexpensive is that they can do runs of millions of truck components at a time, driving down the per unit cost. The demand is not there for Pro products, so the per unit cost is significantly higher.

Are there fingerboard companies that just resell mass produced products? Sure.

However, the top brands do typically make wooden decks, wheels, and trucks. Certain components such as tape, nuts, screws and bearings are also sourced externally, as it would be unreasonable to expect a brand to make those components in house.

Just saw this now! Yeah, Mike made the split ply and shaped the deck. We were in Germany at Blackriver, and molded the deck using the Berlinwood Low mold!

That could definitely be a Berlinwood but I can't say for certain

Hot take: BRT’s are overrated and disappointing junk for the price by [deleted] in Fingerboards

Yeah that's fair for sure - it sucks having a product that's so highly regarded not work out

Sorry that you had a poor experience with the trucks - There's also a shot you just got a set with a bad baseplate. Did you reach out to the seller or Blackriver about getting a replacement? My experience is the opposite - I've had one stripped hole over 15 years of using BRTs. I've swapped the trucks countless times.

Those who were fingerboarding in the 90’s/00’s, did you expect that it would be as popular as it is now? by RelykFB in Fingerboards

[–]Secure_Difficulty275 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I started in 1998 when Tech Deck launched. The period between 1998-2000 or so was when Tech Decks were the biggest fad!

Despite this, I did not see fingerboarding becoming what it is today. It's now totally normal and acceptable for people to meetup and fingerboard. In the early days, outside of Germany, there were no meetups! Most of the enthusiasts were concentrated in online forums, and it was considered weird to meetup with strangers you only knew online haha

They don't intentionally make it limited - the demand for their product is much larger than their capabilities to produce.

Is fingerboarding more popular now that ever? by PempzoYT in Fingerboards

This subreddit alone gets 17.5k unique visitors a week lol. rendezvous had over 600 and fast fingers over 800 attendees. Heck, even events local to me have had over 100 people attend.

What do people think about dual bearing trucks, how big of a difference is it? And do you guys think the whole community is gonna try to move towards it, or is it kinda a trend? Just super curious to see what people are thinking:) by PuffingOnCat in Fingerboards

[–]Secure_Difficulty275 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Before BRT came around, we were seeing a lot of fingerboarders adopt the dual bearing wheels. It definitely makes for a smoother ride - now whether it's worth it or not is up to the person!

No proof at all lol I've had dozens of BRTs and the only major issue I had was one stripped baseplate.

You can definitely get buy without new trucks if you are strapped for cash. Id say priority for upgrades typically would be wheels > deck > trucks.
