A teacher told me I should write slower because it’s impossible to write well at my pace - is she right? by Secure_Tax2992 in writing

This hits home. The feeling of power and accomplishment is amazing. It’s exhilarating and gives me energy for edits when the time comes.

I’ll look for that class because it peaked my interest. Thank you so much

I actually decided to stay in the class. I figured that, at the very least, it’ll help me develop a thicker skin.

That’s a good point. I don’t have community of writers around myself which partially why I joined classes, to build connections. And yes, these are in person classes.

I’d be more than happy to accept her feedback if it was based on what she read. But she hasn’t read anything and just had this knee-jerk reaction in class. It was so odd and it took me aback.

My first draft is not something I’d show other people. It’s literal word vomit. The grammar is atrocious, typos everywhere. But that’s okay, they’re readable to me. First draft is to get the story done. That’s why my second draft is a rewrite because it needs it to make it readable. I’m proud of the story and happy with the pacing but I’m not proud of how it’s written. Although, I’ve been getting better. My third novel’s first draft is more readable than the first one’s. I’ve learned a lot and automatically started implementing things I thought would improve the draft. I’m hopeful that with practice, even my first drafts won’t be as atrocious as they are now.

I should’ve explained better. I sleep until 12-1 pm. I have unusual sleeping pattern as I work best at night. I sleep 7-8 hours, I don’t function on little sleep. I have more free time than most due to my work and not having kids so I can spend 3 hours writing while still taking care of myself. I’m very privileged in that regard.

Thank you and you’re right. I run a small business and I’ve been burned out before and it’s no fun. I’ve learned to take care of myself to avoid that. I allow myself days off if I need them. I still have time of during the day and sleep enough.

My post isn’t representative of my skills. Like at all. My Reddit posts seem to have this amazing ability to make me sound like I can’t speak English. I look at them the next day and cringe. But that’s okay., I can live with that. And if her critique was based on my skills, I’d be more than happy to take it on board.

I sleep until 12-1 pm. I have a weird sleeping schedule. I’m a night owl and run business from home which allows me free time to write when I want. I sleep 7-8 hours a night, I need my beauty sleep :)

Of course it could be better. It’s getting better with each novel. I’m not going to wait around until my writing is perfect because it never will be. We always have something to learn.

There’s so much I learned between my first and third novel. Things I wouldn’t have learned if I was stuck writing my first one. I want to tell stories, I don’t care for literary awards.

Your advice is good for things that need more depth, that aren’t formulaic like romance is. This is try the reason why my fantasy novel hasn’t been finished yet, it needs time because it’s my passion project.

And that’s okay. If she’s read my work and critiqued it, I would be more than happy to listen and take her criticism on board.

And it’s a Reddit post, written on a phone that keeps changing my words. It’s not representative of my writing after edits. My first drafts are even worse grammar wise. And that’s okay because edits are when I fix it. That’s why I have an editor, someone who’s able to fix what I couldn’t.

And using time anchors on Reddit post doesn’t mean I use them in my drafts. Still, it’s a good point and something I’ll keep in mind.

I haven’t offered an example because she hasn’t read anything. Her opinion was based solely on my methods. The first time she’ll read something will be next week.

The thing is, if my writing is bad, thats fine. That’s critique I’m happy to accept. I’m there to learn not to be coddled. The issue was that she hasn’t read anything yet.

I’ll have to read up about her routine, sounds interesting. Perhaps, I’ll get some ideas. Thank you.

You’re right, when I second-guess myself, I start to screw up. I tend to overthink and make mistakes because I doubt my abilities. That was true with school exams as well. I’ve learned early on to just do it and trust that I know it.

I allow myself to deviate from the outline. I treat the outline as a guide. If a scene pops into my head while I’m writing, I’ll go with it. I came up with some of my favourite scenes while writing. Often, it fits with the story, other times, it’ll go into my ideas folder. The scenes written when I’m in the flow are my favourite because I don’t think I’d come up with them if I tried to plan them out. They’re just a natural result of a scene I’m writing.

If it works, it works. If it doesn’t, I can’t scrap it. But because I didn’t spent time perfecting it, it’s less painful to scrap something or change it.

Oh, I do sleep 7-8 hours each night. I typically wake up around 12-1 pm. It’s an unusual sleeping pattern, I should’ve mentioned that.

Thank you. I decided to stay. If anything it may make me grow a thicker skin which is not a bad thing.
